Hi Dev here! The reason to mention the distinction is that machine learning has been used in game development for yrs. for muscle deformers or pathing. It speeds up specific issues in our pipelines. The artist/designer has control over the process.
Gen Ai just barfs data with no process control.

Not sure you understood it. The article draws a clear distinction between machine learning animation and the generative voice work clearly here. The quote you grabbed states the two techniques used, but it then goes on to explain how they differ further below.

Marking down Arc Raiders for using machine learning and text-to-speech, and lumping them together with generative AI, is incredibly misguided. In the case of Machine Learning it's downright disrespectful to the immense amount of engineering talent and effort involved.

agreed, probably some form of machine learning for optimization

This is an unfortunate take. There's a subtle, but useful and important, distinction to draw between "machine learning" and "generative AI". We should encourage people to understand the differences.

Seems Eurogamer are the only game journos who aren’t cowards
Also love that this isn’t just “genAI sucks,” it’s “this is how genAI *makes* this game suck,” while also making important distinctions between it and machine learning, both of which are important in this conversation

For Arc Raiders to ride the wave of human sociability all the way to the bank, while also being so contemptuous of the thing that makes us social animals in its own workflow demonstrates a lack of artistic integrity that I find impossible to ignore.

They’re probably using traditional machine learning, which has been around for decades, not generative AI like ChatGPT.

This research gets called "AI" now because that's the latest buzzword. 5 years ago it would've been called "machine learning" (the term the researchers themselves use, although the magazine writer calls it AI). In the oughts it would've been called "big data." Before that, "time-series forecasting."

they used machine learning to animate the bots’ movement (very good results) and developed a TTS engine for arbitrary throwaway voice lines as well as a voice-masking feature for users. you are being histrionic and unreasonable

If they are calling it AI because that is how you have to market using machine learning these days it seems like a great use case for that kind of technology. But since it is just a press release the details of what they mean by AI, and proof of the functionality, will matter.
