#lupercalia
"The Romans celebrated Lupercalia long after they had forgotten the original meaning of the holiday."

Like, how does that even happen? Anyway, back to checking out Black Friday deals.

Like if you read some Roman descriptions of Lupercalia they come right out and say “We have no idea what the fuck this ritual is on about, it’s just how it’s done” and feel like the lulav is in the same category we’re just less direct about it 😂

Julius Caesar refused a crown three times at the Lupercalia. Trump grabbed the first one he was offered. He probably would have tried it on, but the box is too complicated.

Julius Caesar, Lupercalia, 44 BC.
Trump on No Kings: "This is not a king. They're referring to me as a king. I'm not a king."

Drusilla had warned her that the rites of Lupercalia were different here in Britain, something about their priests that she wouldn’t or couldn’t articulate. She was curious enough to take to the streets to find them.

She paused, hearing howls and cries from the edge of the village. #VssMystery

It’s an ancient rite, even to the embarrassment of the civilization. Reminds me of the Roman ceremonies of Lupercalia. #TOSSatNight

it's an anecdote relayed, i think, suetonius. at the celebration of the lupercalia (big public festival) antony went through a show of trying to put a crown on caesar's head and caesar refused it. he "tried" three times and caesar refused it three times, presumably to heighten the dramatic effect

I finished Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar shortly after Lupercalia - a heart-wrenching semi-biographical confessional novel about the shame of a woman in the 1960's who finds it impossible to conform to the norms of her time. Read this book if you've ever felt like you were born wrong.

I wonder how many furries exist because of the number of anthropomorphic mutant beastmen in the 1980s and 90s? It's likely always been with us (Lupercalia, ancient Egyptian gods etc) but maybe animism expressed itself in a modern way in 80s cartoons, imprinting on psyches and recreating furries?

In the museum of Palazzo Massimo alle Terme in Rome, this Trajan-era marble depicts Remus and Romulus suckled by the she-wolf, Lupa. Surrounding figures represent aspects of the Lupercalia, Roman feast of purification.

Ooh, BPAL has launched this year's Lupercalia (v-day) line! Their rose and chocolate scents are particularly good, so now's a great time to check 'em out.

They probably still have a bunch of great Xmas and Halloween scents in stock, too.
We recorded this version of D.H. Lawrence’s poem “The Elephant Is Slow To Mate” back in 2021, the first time we released our Lupercalia perfume adaptation.

And now it’s back, in this year’s Luper launch! ✨🐘🐘✨

The irony of Trump being one of the worst businessmen ever vs Caesar, one of the greatest military leaders ever, is tremendous

I go back to the days before, Lupercalia, when it was all about teens running out to the forests to get laid....That's my kind of celebration...well..when I was a teen. Now? whew...no...maybe..... 😀

Though Lupercalia is my chosen holiday as it celebrates personal & carnal indulgences, love, sexual freedom & body autonomy…& usually involves decadent orgies, Valentine’s Day is what most are accustomed to. So regardless of which you choose, choose love in yourself and others

Roses are red,
Dictators love regalia
How are we fucking up worse than the Roman Republic
In our response to Lupercalia?
#OnThisDay - 14 February - in 44 BC the 'Lupercalia Incident' occurred. Mark Antony attempted to present Caesar with a diadem – a symbol of kingship. A moment of deep political resonance and one which hastened Caesar's downfall. #Caesar 🏺
