Though for some time he was shielded from most of the cruelty. Saved by the Great Grandmother, the last of their tribes Healers and the last Leader of the tribe.

A woman appears behind Kullas grandmother. Telling Ayva that her own daughter would shame her for it. It's Diantha, Kullas Great Grandmother and the past Leader of their tribe. Ayva looks annoyed hearing that voice behind her. Diantha points at Ayva with her staff in her hand. Ayva tells Diantha that her weakness will be trained out of the tribe. All that mattered is the tribe growing stronger with them needing more fighters. Diantha throws the fact that Ayva only wants power to steal crystals from their spirit lands for her own nefarious purposes. Ayva tells Diantha that she had her chance to make the tribe greater. But now it's her turn. Ayva claims the tribe follows her. While asking if Diantha follows her too. Even though Ayva is walking away as Diantha doesn't answer her.

Being healed happened a lot while Nicholas was younger. Though even in his dream Nicholas couldn't remember any of the others in a bed.

Nicholas watches his younger self be healed. His great grandmother warning him about asking questions about his mother to his grandma. Telling her grandson that he has to survive. Nicholas retorts weakly that he doesn't know anything about his mother. Saying anything he asks gets his grandmother mad. His great grandmother tells him when one is alive, one must love as much as one could. Because life is a party that will soon end. Diantha reminds him his ancestors are always smiling down on him and that someday she'll join them. Before also reminding him while he recites the Green Word for him to meditate. Nicholas clenches a fist as he watches his younger self quickly get out from bed. Saying that he has to go recite the Green Word before he's caught not doing it. Since the punishment for that would be his food taken away tomorrow as well. While present day Nicholas wants to reach out to his great grandmother.

Nicholas recently had a dream of his past. Born into a once peaceful tribe now ruled with fear by his own grandmother. A harsh manipulative elder who only wanted to expand her power. Using the Green Word much like a cudgel to those inside and outside of the tribe.

She talks about Nick winning he'd learn about his mother. Insulting Nick's mom by calling her weak. Causing Nicholas to rush in quickly for him to be slashed down. Ayva tells Nicholas he'll have to study the Green Word instead of eating that day. All while a current Nicholas watches from afar knowing that he can't do anything.
