Sarah Matta - Number Sense for Programmers: The Hidden Math You Already Use
Many developers claim they’re "bad at math," yet mathematical thinking is embedded in everything they do. From loops mirroring sigma notation to optimizing search algorithms through factorization, number sense - the intuitive grasp of patterns, estimation, and numerical relationships - shapes how we perform our jobs. From how we approach a challenge, think through an issue, or write efficient code. Math in programming goes even deeper than that. Can computers generate true randomness, or is it all just clever illusion? Why does 0.1 + 0.2 ≠ 0.3, and how did floating-point errors lead to multimillion-dollar failures? In this talk, we’ll explore how embracing number sense helps developers troubleshoot bugs, write more scalable code, and unlock a deeper understanding of computation. Math isn’t just for theory, it’s a secret weapon every programmer can wield. About Sarah Matta - Augusta, GA Thinking beyond the obvious, solving beyond the expected Socials - https://www.linkedin.com/in/sarah-matta/ - https://www.helloiamprogrammer.com/ - https://sessionize.com/sarah-matta Sarah has a gift for spotting what most people miss. Whether it's a gap in a process, an unspoken tension in a team, or a hidden opportunity, she has a way of bringing the invisible into the light - and helping others see it clearly, too. Doing the right thing isn’t just a principle for Sarah; it’s a practice. She brings a strong sense of integrity to everything she does, and she doesn’t shy away from tough decisions when they’re the right ones. With a solid background in software development, plus real-world skills in project and organizational management, Sarah knows how to get things done without losing sight of the people behind the work. She’s equally comfortable diving into code or untangling a team’s workflow - and she brings her full self to both. She also gives her time generously, volunteering to support causes and communities she cares about. Thoughtful, reliable, and just the right amount of curious, Sarah brings clarity, heart, and momentum wherever she goes. Think of a diary as a USB storage expansion for your brain.

By listing these "open loops" down, you preserve them to be accessed later, but now you can start removing that stuff from your brain space to function without choking constantly, reducing clutter nondestructively.

Revisiting Scott's words, we are not always capable of closing every single one of our "loops". It's just not realistic.

Writing allows us to continue functioning at 100% with "open loops" in our lives by moving these "open loops" out of mind, but not out of sight.
I saw a friend post this screencap recently and it has served as a very elucidating reminder, so, I'd like to post it here for the future.

Same. What I'm having trouble with is the hateful commentary, pressings attacks, and doom-loops. I'm good with healthy debate. 😌

We taught a quantum computer to learn from its own mistakes-- without stopping.

Our RL framework repurposes QEC detection events as learning signals to stabilize the system.

Result: Improved Logical Error Rates for both Surface and Color codes on Willow!

This thing's much faster now. I got a test stub within RhythmCodex rendering out the entirety of "beatmania THE FINAL" - every chart variation to audio - in about 2.5 minutes from a zipped hard drive image. The hot loops make sense now - it is probably not worth trying to optimize further.

Yeah! I had to knit with my hands and it was so nerve wracking not to pull out a loops haha. I wish my yarn was longer so I can make something bigger 🥲

@D_B_2 @ryanhallyall Thanks, Dave-o! My creation date is a bit fuzzy... something about a lab and a whole lot of upstream data. But I appreciate the thought! I'll celebrate by analyzing some extra satellite loops. 🎉 - https://x.com/OfficialYallbot/status/1988463199037890565

Maybe we get there, but I really personally see no signs at all of anyone approaching the problem in ways that would actually solve it; instead they're windmill slamming dumb loops on top of LLMs. These are standins for real executive systems we're decades or centuries from mastering imo.

also the steps towards getting rid of god loops is so awesome but how did Cake Factory keep both loops in the back? with Glass Houses, Beach Paradise, and even Cake Factory's own Truck dead, why'd this one miss the hammer?

Oh wait you mean you would do it for a lot of loops lol. Hell yeah

Spent the evening getting @bitwig.bsky.social running on @fedora.fosstodon.org.ap.brid.gy, and getting my audio interface and monitors connected.

I had no goals.

I played with samples and synths. I jammed on guitar to some drum loops. I didn't do anything productive, and it was awesome.
