As a professional writer most of my life (i.e., someone who earned salaries from writing of all types), I instinctively knew this rule and know what sounds correct, but wasn't ever taught the rule.

As logophiles might observe, "data" is a plural noun. Appropriate here, as the data - of which there are many, of many kinds, from many sources and extending over many times - all speak in one voice.
