#lakepigment
Making a lake pigment from natural sources - this time a red cabbage, my personal favorite for making a brilliant ultramarine blue. Using simple chemistry to precipitate a solid from a liquid solution makes me feel like I'm brewing a potion in a cauldron.

So my first lake pigment is all ground up and stored in vials until a day for paintmaking. I am jazzed and ready to make more! #lakepigment #botanicalcolor #paintmaking

My first lake pigment made from onion skins. This is the excruciating drying phase. The pigment on the left was the original pigment, but I noticed that the runoff water was still pigmented so I gave it another go - viola a lighter pigment. #lakepigment #botanicalcolor #onionskinpaint #makingpaint

Cochineal is used for dying and to make a #lakepigment. It can make a red color (for which it was and is highly prized) and a magenta-y color. The color varies by what the dye is mixed with, acids bring out the red, alkaline brings out the purple.

Last year, I got into lake pigment making from random stuff in my backyard. One of those random things was the banana flower. Today, after finally having all the necessary supplies, I turned the extracted pigment into watercolor paint. Let’s see how they turn out!

Time for a little experimenting! I fall in love with the color of this tree every year. This year, I’m doing the #lakepigment process to see if I can capture it in paint. ❤️ #artist #painting #watercolor
