For a gag spin off of the main series, KyoAni was able to out preform Gonzo in the action department in places. It does feel very of its time but a lot of these episodes are lodged in my brain like a bullet. As good as I remembered it!

the crazy relay race, and all the absurdities animated that made it just feel alive, even with all the antics going on. It goes beyond the animation though, the colors just popped off the screen, as you could just feel the love of KyoAni for this newer work of Arawi. That brings the comparison

it's pretty wild to remember that in 2007 the first season of CLANNAD by KyoAni started while also the movie adaptation by Osamu Dezaki ran in cinemas. When did that ever happen that two adaptations of the same source material by two completely different teams released at the same time?

CITY THE ANIMATION (2025) fair or not, i'm not gonna sit here and skirt around the comparisons to nichijou that people might inevitably have about CITY, and i'll say my basic opinion right off the bat that i'd sooner recommend people watch nichijou than CITY, but also that if you did like nichijou you'll like CITY just about as much my gripes with CITY start with it being 13 episodes instead of 26, there's parts where they tried to keep the pace fast and sometimes it can be a bit much. there's a number of choices i'm a bit sour on kyoani making as far as cutting content goes. it also doesn't have quite the same special sauce that nichijou had with every character being instantly charming and recognizable. CITY had a similarly sized cast but i find myself only gravitating to a smaller percentage of the characters the op/ed combo also aren't as memorable but that's a nitpick. plus i think the op song is really good and maybe better than the hyadain songs (hot take) but the animation that goes with it doesn't quite have the right oompf factor imo. however. CITY as a work of art is exactly that. it's a work of art. sometimes it's even the best anime to ever do it. genuinely. it's a shame you can only watch episode 5 for the first time once in your life. the art style is a delightful and gorgeous recreation of arawi keiichi's style. the soundtrack is something i gotta listen to more and idk if it beats out nichijou in that department but some of it is pretty fun. i also think CITY has a worse hit/miss ratio than nichijou did as far as scenes that endear themselves to me go. but whenever a CITY scene hits, it HITS. the characters i did gravitate to (which is mostly the more major characters), are all quite fun. ask me to pick a favorite and i'd have a few choices. maybe wako, maybe niikura, maybe riko? matsuri and ecchan were a fun duo, maybe them. do not separate them. their dynamic might be the highlight of the whole anime for me big recommend (for nichijou fans)

not a fan of nichijou (actually I'm pretty famously a diehard kyoani hater) but for some reason I smile every time I think about shake it saturday. maybe I just miss kinda mediocre pop rock being a thing, I don't think it exists anymore.
