From that distance, in the darkness, it looked black as tar as it seeped between his fingers. Hatred burned in the depths of dying eyes. That's what Halsin remembered most. Not the bitter curse—spit with Ketheric Thorm's final breath—but how he withered and rotted, as though the devastation he wrought decayed him from the inside out. A pair of harpers dragged his corpse from the battlefield. The monster who had claimed so many dear ones—had haunted thoughts and nightmares alike for months—felled at last. It didn't feel like a victory. There was no sigh of relief. No solace. Only an unshakeable, bone-deep sense of… Loss. He should have known, then.

Courage believes people can change. She talked Ketheric down and had him ready to surrender when Aylin swooped in and started the fight again. A part of her always wonders what would have happened if he’d stood down.
