Not really. But often Kertasníkir, the last one, gives the biggest gift and it’s often something to help pass the time waiting for the evening and opening presents.

Older kids that are too grown up to get a visit from the yule lads also might get something from Kertasníkir.

Tonight Kertasníkir (Candle Stealer), the last of Iceland's 13 Yule Lads, comes down from the mountains. He steals candles (that used to be made from animal fat) and eats them.

Children leave their shoes out in the window, he gives the good ones a small gift, the bad ones get a potato.

14 December (13th day of Christmas): Kertasníkir, because what better way could you possibly have to ring in Christmas Eve than a troll who steals your candles and chases your children?
December 23, 2025 at 9:09 PM
Tonight, Kertasníkir arrives (AI image):

The thirteenth was Candle Beggar
- 'twas cold, I believe,
If he was not the last
of the lot on Christmas Eve.
He trailed after the little ones
who, like happy sprites,
ran about the farm with
their fine tallow lights.

Tonight our 13th and final santa comes out of the highlands to bring gifts but also mischief. This is Kertasníkir, or Candle Stealer.

In the before times, candles were made from tallow, and thus semi edible. This Yule Lad will steal your candles for a midnight snack.

(Nú þjóðar velferð hann þættist styrkja
og þyti upp á heiðar að virkja.)

And last but not least:

Dec 24: Kertasníkir (Candle-Stealer)

Candle-Stealer was known for being the one who followed children to steal their candles (which used to be edible, made from fat).

@hildur.bsky.social look what we received from an Icelandic friend. Had I not seen your posts, I would not have known who these characters were, and I would not have been so excited to see this children's game.

Presented in the order that the cards were in the box.

Kertasníkir, or Candle-Stealer, is the last Yule Lad to arrive. On Christmas Eve, he lurks in the shadows, following children joyfully wandering through town, candles in hand. Kertasníkir’s goal isn’t innocent; he steals the candles to devour them, as they’re made of tallow. 🕯️🤤
