The Jira paradox, so flexible yet so inflexible
November 12, 2025 at 5:34 PM
This week, we wrap up our 2-parter on Jira! (Part 1: techblows.net/5; Part 2: techblows.net/6) Hear about:

- The Atlassian founders' matching $100M houses
- How Jira turns its own failures into more sales
- Jira's special way of alienating us from our creativity and initiative

True. Also making art should count as doing my job. I should just have a Jira ticket in progress that says "Creating Good Stuff" forever and get paid double what I make building a bunch of useless software for folks to pimp out to execs before abandoning

I don’t reeeeally understand YAML yet but it’s starting to sink in. It takes a while for me. And it’s such a different language from everything else I code in.

Fiddling with this stuff in HA makes me long for the ability to code edit in Power Automate and Jira Automation.

Microsoft Project, Primavera, and Jira are built for detail - tasks, dependencies, logic.
But when it’s time to share those plans, the detail becomes overwhelming.
Traqplan turns complex, line-heavy schedules into clear, visual timelines anyone can understand in seconds - traqplan.com

I have cursor + claude write my PR descriptions and convert bullet points into Jira tickets… if there’s an API, AI will be able to help

And respecting the user means doing everything we possibly can to get that form out of the way as quickly as possible.

In the case of JIRA, you just want to create the ticket and get back to work.
November 12, 2025 at 12:53 PM
Which brings me to the first law of form design:

→ Nobody wants to use your form

Because JIRA, like most digital products, is full of forms.

• Creating a ticket is a form
• Updating a ticket is a form
• Finding a ticket is a form

The truth is:
November 12, 2025 at 12:53 PM
In fact, you just piss users off; something I can attest to having attended a million retros and hearing colleagues say things like:

“I just created a ticket and I can’t find it”

The only joy you get from JIRA is when you close the browser and pretend you don’t have to use it.
November 12, 2025 at 12:53 PM
If you mean surprise or entertainment, then you’re focusing on the wrong problem – because that’s not a real problem.

Take JIRA, the enterprise project management tool.

All you want to do is create, track and progress tickets.

If you nail this, you give users joy.

If you don’t, you don’t.

“there are whole job ladders designed to insulate tech workers from human beings” first of all eff you, second of all, I know what you’re talking about and the reason we have the whole producer/jira jockey job class has to do with execs not knowing how to project plan
