In my gamelan group we often play western tunes arranged for gamelan instruments. But does anyone ever do this in reverse, by taking a Javanese gamelan piece and arranging it to be played on western instruments?

Oh yeah, so many fascinating sounds that have come and gone in past eras.. I don't like the sound of it😆 but I'm fascinated by the rise of Keroncong music in colonial Indonesia for example, Portuguese influenced Hawaiian music sung in Malay in a Dutch colony by Javanese people.. The pop of its time

Unexpected France: The Indonesian word for buffet, "prasmanan", came from Betawi "prasmanan", from Dutch "Fransman" (Frenchman), in the sense of "service à la française". For years I thought "prasmanan" came from Sanskrit as a Javanese loanword.

Oh, I believe that was the more classic, reserved Balinese gamelan compared to kebyar. Starting from the classic, of course! A lot of gamelan groups abroad play Javanese style, I think. Just recently I discovered Indra Swara, a group based in Mexico, and they play both Javanese and Sundanese styles.

Indonesians (specifically the dominant Javanese Indon-ruling elite) can be seen as playing the role of “white” in West Papua.

 ほぼBluesky閲覧専用機として旧いiPhone SE(初代。バッテリーを大容量タイプに変更)を引っ張り出してきたが、ややこしい英文をGoogle翻訳にかけるとジャワ語での訳文が表示される。

 遠い昔、Javanese(英語表記だとJapaneseの隣にある)をタップしたせいだと思われるが、毎回日本語に変更するの、面倒すぎる。かくなる上は翻訳使わなくても済むよう英語の学習時間を増やすしか(違

I was initially (cautiously) excited to see that Javanese structures and some Indonesian foods were included in DT but .... well, you know. 🫠

Originally I designed Eti to be a GNC guy brown guy who wore a lot of make up because Charibert's character designed pissed me off so bad.

I miss SEA so much. All night rediscovering Indonesian music. A lot of Javanese. The language transports me. Missing the archipelago a lot as usual. Ending it on this gorgeous Sarawak one that is a mix of different languages.

Do they have complex rhythms? I understand Javanese music is crazy in that department

I know this is a recurring theme among many languages, but I'm still thinking of how stacked this Indonesian word is: "punyanya" (his belonging)

Punya: elided from "empunya". From old Javanese empu (master), in this context "owner". So, empunya -> "of the master".

-nya: 3rd person sing. possessive
