✨New preprint! Why do people express outrage online? In 4 studies we develop a taxonomy of online outrage motives, test what motives people report, what they infer for in- vs. out-partisans, and how motive inferences shape downstream intergroup consequences. Led by @felix-chenwei.bsky.social 🧵👇

Also it's a hard problem to crack generally, the people who care the most about this stuff tend to be victims to it and that's not a great mental state to build sound theories of social dynamics and intergroup hatreds.

The data from mainstream media to social media seems to be telling a story: the incentives of political discourse + news sharing amplify intergroup conflict around moralized issues (culture war)

In turn, politicians ignore socioeconomic issues (thus increasing inequality and right-wing populism).
We have perverse incentives on all media platforms (from social media to traditional media) to inflame conflict.

It's profitible because it captures attention and drives engagement ("mobilization")

In turn, this drives political actors to focus more on these issues.
Cool new working paper on why and how cable news threw gasoline on the culture war fire. The culture war isn't optimal for electoral candidates, but it's optimal for cable news companies.

Engagement-based #algorithms amplify intergroup hostility + moral-emotional content, leading it to be overrepresented in your feed

This leads us to falsely perceive that people want to see this kind of content and share more of it.

When a racialised Other commits a violent crime, Goodwin concludes instantly that the reason is their nature as a racialised Other, separate and distinct from an imagined British nature. This belief in intra-group unity and intergroup incommensurability is called Racism.

We're now at "black people aren't British". Open sewer racism. Look forward to seeing him on QT again soon.

Social scientists often talk abt the contact hypothesis theory for which interpersonal interaction under certain circumstances can significantly improve intergroup relations. We don‘t know if public transit systematically creates these circumstances, but we do know that cars systematically do *not*.
i think if you ride public transit enough you learn that most weird behavior is not dangerous, and conversely i think driving a car teaches you that everyone is trying to kill you at all times

It was a pleasure to chat with Dave & David on @epthepod.bsky.social about all things groups: how people think about groups, when we'd expect to see intergroup tensions, and intergroup dynamics in 2025. Thanks for having me, both!

Thread: I might add that this fits within the intergroup conflict narrative (Us vs. Them) this administration pushes for just about everything, as well. Making unauthorized migrants as the "scary other" helps cover a lot of the things this administration is doing.
Given these numbers, we might ask why he makes so much noise about undocumented migrants on Medicaid.

I'd argue maybe because: the real goal is to cut the Medicaid that legally goes to US citizen kids of undocumented migrants, but that's politically a harder sell.

Emergency Medicaid for undocumented immigrants made up only 0.4% of total Medicaid spending in 2022, a new study published Thursday finds.

"[I]nitial survey and experimental results suggest that hate speech leads to desensitization, and this in turn affects intergroup relations. Conversely, recent findings suggest that empathy-inducing interventions can resensitize individuals to hate speech and make them less supportive of use."

The widespread ubiquity of hate speech affects people's attitudes and behavior. Exposure to hate speech can lead to prejudice, dehumanization, and lack of empathy towards members of outgroups. However...
