Also it's a hard problem to crack generally, the people who care the most about this stuff tend to be victims to it and that's not a great mental state to build sound theories of social dynamics and intergroup hatreds.

The data from mainstream media to social media seems to be telling a story: the incentives of political discourse + news sharing amplify intergroup conflict around moralized issues (culture war)

In turn, politicians ignore socioeconomic issues (thus increasing inequality and right-wing populism).

We have perverse incentives on all media platforms (from social media to traditional media) to inflame conflict.

It's profitible because it captures attention and drives engagement ("mobilization")

In turn, this drives political actors to focus more on these issues.

Social scientists often talk abt the contact hypothesis theory for which interpersonal interaction under certain circumstances can significantly improve intergroup relations. We don‘t know if public transit systematically creates these circumstances, but we do know that cars systematically do *not*.

Individuals often conform to the intergroup attitudes and behaviors modeled by their peers in a given situation. They express more tolerance of racist speech following a peer's expression of racist views, and less tolerance after a peer condemns racism (Blanchard, Crandall, Brigham, & Vaughn, 1994); they adjust to the current peer consensus on stereotyping when reporting their own racial stereotypes (Sechrist and Stangor, 2001, Stangor et al., 2001); they are more tolerant of discrimination against minorities and women after overhearing racist or sexist jokes (Ford and Ferguson, 2004, LaFrance and Woodzicka, 1998) and when they perceive prejudice against those groups to be socially acceptable (Crandall, Eshleman, & O'Brien, 2002). A signal as subtle as a peer's antiracism t-shirt can go so far as to influence an individual's unconscious, uncensored prejudice (Lun et al., 2007, Sinclair et al., 2005).

Thread: I might add that this fits within the intergroup conflict narrative (Us vs. Them) this administration pushes for just about everything, as well. Making unauthorized migrants as the "scary other" helps cover a lot of the things this administration is doing.

Given these numbers, we might ask why he makes so much noise about undocumented migrants on Medicaid.

I'd argue maybe because: the real goal is to cut the Medicaid that legally goes to US citizen kids of undocumented migrants, but that's politically a harder sell.

The Unequal Effects of Unequal Contact: Power, Race, and Social Cohesion in the U.S. Military Salma Mousa* Eddie Yangt May 21, 2025 Abstract The contact hypothesis posits that cooperative, equal contact reduces prejudice. Yet in practice, contact is often unequal — both within the contact setting itself, or because of inherent power imbalances between minority and majority groups. Leveraging rich data from surveys, censuses, and testimonials among servicemembers in WWII and the Vietnam War, we develop and test a theory of unequal contact. For minori-ties, we find that equal contact improves intergroup attitudes, while unequal contact between soldiers and lieutenants sparks backlash effects. For majorities, we find mixed effects: White soldiers respond to equal contact with more support for military integration but less support for Black rights, suggesting that equality may trigger feelings of threat. We add qualitative nuance to these results by digitizing thousands of veteran testimonies from both wars, revealing drastic asymmetric in how White vs. non-White veterans describe their experiences with race within and outside the military. Our results underscore the importance of internal and external power status in determining the effects of contact.

He's using intergroup bias to generate hate crimes against American citizens who disagree with him and his policies. As an author of Project 2025, he's the one who ought to be prosecuted for crimes against humanity. His policies are dangerous for all except male, self identifying Christians.
