Alberta is poised to become a major player in the growing field of artificial intelligence (AI) development with the introduction of new legislation aimed at attracting AI data centers to the province. The Utilities Statutes Amendment Act, or Bill 8, proposes changes designed to meet the substantial energy demands of these facilities while maintaining grid reliability and affordability for Albertans, including the ability for data centers to generate their own power and connect directly to the power grid, thereby increasing Alberta's power capacity and preventing strain on existing resources.
