There were no public articulations of these humiliations, so we took refuge in accidental occasions to weave our resentments and hatreds into little stories that lost their impact as soon as they were told.

One problem I see is that repeated humiliations may prove very costly over time in terms of U.K and EU self-confidence as well as international credibility. At some point, the question becomes no longer whether Trump, Putin, or Xi take Europeans seriously, but whether they do so themselves.
