#hoodedplover
Margaret River WA is thrilled to have the 1st #HoodedPlover fledgling of the season! A major milestone for the region given no fledglings were recorded last season!
A HUGE thank you to @birdlifeoz.bsky.social vols and land managers!

What better way to celebrate National #ThreatenedSpeciesDay than with the first #HoodedPlover chicks of the season in south west WA? The tiny fluff balls were seen foraging along the beach with their parents. Remember to give birds space!

Why does the Biennial Count matter?
It provides our best estimate of Eastern #HoodedPlover population size and informs our conservation efforts. Data demonstrated a population decline since the 80s leading to the species species’ listing as Nationally Threatened in 2014.

Heading to the beach this long weekend? #MindTheHoodies if you do! This is the busiest weekend on AUS beaches and there are many flightless #HoodedPlover chicks on the ground!
Give them a chance by walking on the water’s edge and keeping your dog on the lead.

Each #HoodedPlover is also measured, weighed and a drop of blood is taken from the tarsal vein (in the bird’s “leg”) for #genetic sampling.

The Biennial Count is not just a beach walk! Our skilled #citizenscientists make it possible to survey thousands of km of suitable #HoodedPlover habitat. This data demonstrated species decline, leading to its listing as #NationallyThreatened in 2014!

It's #hoodiecount time! Our Project Officers Dan and Sonia have just surveyed Discovery Bay, from Nelson to Cape Bridgewater (VIC) for the Eastern #HoodedPlover Biennial Count -- almost 60 km of suitable habitat, good post-lockdown exercise! Dave from @GHCMA also joined them!
