Today, I remember Corporal Nathan Cirillo, of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada, who was standing guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, victim of a shooting at Canada's Parliament Hill in Ottawa in 2014.

On Remembrance Day, I always think of my great-uncle, Harold Rogers. He was an exemplar of patriotism, sacrifice, tough-mindedness, humility, and service, both to Canada and to the United Kingdom. He enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force In Hamilton, Ontario, in May of 1916, at the age of 17, with the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders. He lied about his age in order to be able to serve. Uncle Hal (as we called him...I had the pleasure of knowing him) fought at Vimy Ridge (9-12 April, 1917), a historic battle that saw the Canadian troops come out from under the command of the British Empire and conduct an all-Canadian assault against the Germans. From a cemetery in northern France, the Canadians were to take out a heavily-fortified 47 km ridge that provided the Germans a clear field of vision over the Allied troops and a major strategic advantage. 100,00 French soldiers had already died trying to take that God-forsaken piece of ground. After heavy shelling of the Germans to soften them up, 15,000 Canadian troops stormed the ridge. While the Canadians were successful, it was at the cost of 3,598 lives and an additional 7,000 wounded. Uncle Hal fought again at Lens and Hill 70, part of the Third Battle of Artois (August, 1917), where the Germans started using mustard gas in earnest in order to neutralize the Allied forces. Luckily he was not exposed to the gas. The Canadian troops made no headway in this offensive. In October of that year, the Canadian Corps transferred to Ypres (Belgium), where they fought the Second Battle of Passchendaele, over a period of two weeks, in torrential rain and mud. The men lived in trenches and the Germans again used gas. This time, Uncle Hal was gassed, although he survived. 15,654 other Canadians did not. Uncle Hal's final battle was at Amiens (August 1918), which was the start of the 100 Days Offensive that would ultimately lead to the end of World War 1. 13 November 1916 Captain Andrew MacGregor of 6 Bn Seaforth Highlanders was killed in action and buried in Mailly Wood Cemetery. Andrew was 26.

Andrew is also remembered on the Huddersfield War Memorial and at @caiuscollege.bsky.social #WW1 #History #HistoryMatters

Today I will be thinking of a great grandfather who I never knew. He was a Corporal in the Seaforth Highlanders who lost his life in a bloody senseless war where only the bankers & undertakers won aged just 27 in July 1917 and is buried in an immaculate, well cared graveyard in Belgium.

Thinking about my grandfather Ernest Victor Adams and great uncle Ralph Adams, who served in the Second World War. Gramp was an infantryman in the C.B. Highlanders, fighting in Italy, Belgium & the Netherlands; Ralph was a merchant mariner. Both survived the war, dying a few months apart in 2005–6.

Photo collection depicting my father’s WWII service. Top picture is of his graduation class from the training base in Farnum Quebec, March 30th, 1943. He’s the one in the back row on the left. This group was made up of soldiers of different regiments. Middle picture is a Memorial Display my older brother(himself a Canadian Armed Forces Reserve and Royal Canadian Mounted Police veteran)made. It has a picture of my Dad in uniform, at age nineteen, just before he was shipped to Italy with the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada. Above his picture is a Medal Clasp Depicting his Campaign Stars from Italy, France and Germany. On the right of his picture is another picture of Dad standing in front of a two and one half ton transport lorry during his time in Italy. It’s from a story written about him in the Swift Current Saskatchewan newspaper, after he returned from the war. Beside this picture is his record of service, list of medals, commendations and countries he served in. Below that, are two updated Clasps with silver maple leafs added depicting his medals were awarded for service outside of Canada. The lower clasp depicts his Voluntary Service Medal along with medals awarded in Holland and Belgium. Below the medals are Remembrance Day Commemorative pins and his Legion pin. Below the Memorial Display is a photo of my Dad’s Regimental Cap Badge which is a stags head with a huge rack of antlers and the inscribed motto “Cuidich ’n Righ” in Gaelic which translates to “Aid The King”, or “Help The King”.
