Wigner's cats with high-entropy random numbers

Recently, we have shown that using mixed matrix ensembles, a remarkable property appears, so called Wigner’s cats, i.e., shape of semicircle starts looking like a cat.

Yeah I think our schools do a bad job on this one. Energy is always conserved but “energy” per se doesn’t do anyone any good. What you need to do work is *useful* energy = low-entropy energy, like a gallon of gas, or water high on a mountain, or a bright, hot Sun in your sky. 1/

Today in #PhilosophyOfCosmology we finished up our exploration of the arrow of time by taking a brief tour of the relationship between entropy and complexity. Very high or low entropy implies simplicity; medium entropy can either be simple or complex. Dynamics determine whether complexity develops.

Somewhat same here, but in the campus office on a Sunday afternoon working out what else I need to get done before the end of the semester, and when I can do it.

Home is very high entropy at the moment. Good luck with yours!

Solution: make both past and future *high* entropy. Which means the Big Bang can't be the beginning of the universe. Jennifer Chen and I suggested a specific model along these lines in 2004, using baby universes to create a double-headed arrow of time.

Spontaneous Inflation and the Origin of the Arrow of Time
We suggest that spontaneous eternal inflation can provide a natural explanation for the thermodynamic arrow of time, and discuss the underlying assumptions and consequences of this view. In the absenc...

Yeah!! It was completely new cultural technique that let too so much paranoia and brain damage! How we viewed our bodies. I feel like seeing yourself constantly in high definition can only lead to a new age of phrenology. So maybe it's good to enter the entropy stage of the net.

The coverage principle highlights that pre-training language models with next-token prediction enhances downstream performance by optimizing high-quality response probabilities, rather than just minimizing cross-entropy loss, influencing AI training strategies. https://arxiv.org/abs/2510.15020

ENTROPY - the state our government is in thanks to the current corrupt administration: ENTROPY is a measure of disorder within the system. High entropy indicates rapid disintegration and chaos. In such a state, the system is vulnerable to both internal and external threats and is at risk of collapse

There is a bias among pundits to eye-roll and dismiss Dem opposition to Trump (such as the No Kings protests) as predictable. But in terms of raw numbers (both events and participants), what we're seeing is much bigger than e.g. the Tea Party movement was. Dems are a high entropy system right now

A new synthesis approach that removes oxygen during processing has enabled the creation of seven novel high-entropy oxide ceramics with potential uses in energy storage and electronics. doi.org/g97fh3
Simple stabilizing solution leads to seven new ceramic materials
Sometimes, less really is more. By removing oxygen during synthesis, a team led by materials scientists at Penn State has created seven new high-entropy oxides (HEOS), a class of ceramics composed of five or more metals with potential for applications in energy storage, electronics and protective coatings.

Shower thought: there will likely not be any beings that excrete Einstein-Bose condensates as waste, since waste is generally high entropy for open thermodynamic systems maintaining themselves and BEC is quite low entropy. Same for laser light.

i've never taken thermo. in statistics, a high-entropy relationship is one in which you need a lot of data to understand potential outcomes. in other words, it's unpredictable, in a chaotic sense, not just in a high-variance sense. i'm saying the potential for meaningful change is very high

But in the real world, gravity exists. Many of the states you naively have in QFT have such high energy that they would collapse to a black hole. And black holes have finite entropy.

It's probably best to think of Hilbert space as "locally" finite-dimensional, but we honestly don't know for sure.

I was also confused, because in thermodynamics, high entropy has the opposite implication: potential is minimal.

High energy?

Not high entropy, unless I seriously misunderstood Thermodynamics...

"High Entropy System" is a good way of describing it. I think that the Democratic Party of ten years from now (assuming Democracy survives lol!) is just unrecognizable from what came before, but I'm not confident in exactly how it'll be different.

Autism. But also high expectations. Be honest about what your expectations are and try to acknowledge that life is entropy and you really can’t control anything. Control is a fear response, figure out what you’re afraid of.

The study finds that stale data can be as informative as on-policy data, unlocking more scalable, asynchronous RL for LLMs.

Why? It reveals the dual nature of high-entropy tokens: while high-entropy tokens are crucial for learning progress, they also introduce instability in the off-policy setting.
