Rowan Atkinson's son is a Gurkha.
(I'm still reading Ben Elton's autobiography. It's great but long so I need these Wikipedia breaks)

A couple of CoC support choices painted. Two snipers, one KAR and one Gurkha/Indian Army. And two Brit engineers with demolitions. I’ll add a third to make the team up later. Happy with these. #wargaming #CoC #spreadthelard #15mm

This is the Gurkha section of the CWGC cemetery near Monte Cassino. It's one section, of one cemetery, from one battle. Troops from the Commonwealth fought in practically every theatre of WW2, and troops from India, Africa and the Caribbean also fought for us in WW1.

This Fundraising Friday we would like to say a big thank you to the School of Army Aeronautical Engineering who recently held a Doko Race, raising over £250 for The Gurkha Welfare Trust.

(Also hard to imagine a modern right-wing populist campaign like Joanna Lumley's one for Gurkha rights)

[October 19th, 1945] British forces have entered Semarang in Central Java, where Indonesian extremists control internment camps holding 22,000 people. Japanese troops have left Batavia, and Gurkha forces now occupy Bandoeng, ensuring safety for 40,000 civilians.

The Brits making all the moves as the Japanese sit tight. A Reece unit and supporting Gurkha section move in on the right flank whilst another section moves out of the Chung on the left. What will the Japanese do…?
October 18, 2025 at 11:48 AM
A fairly aggressive Brit patrol phase leaves the chung in their control, an excellent forming up point. Brit forces are a recce patrol consisting of a Gurkha plt, universal carriers and a MMG. The Japanese are deep in their bunkers waiting though… #spreadthelard #15mm #wargaming

The Japanese make their first move! And it’s a punchy one! An ambush bunker with a MMG reveals itself on the slope of the hill. Cleverly positioned to cover the paddy fields and across the face of the jungle covered hill, it opens fire on the Gurkha section. Only one shock though!!!
October 18, 2025 at 12:21 PM
The Brits manage to neutralise the MMG bunker with some well placed smoke as the recce and Gurkha section sneak up on a Japanese deployment point. Seems to be going well for the Brits…#spreadthelard

We have an excellent Gurkha restaurant nearby in North Liverpool. One of our favourite places.

Decided to have a lazy Sunday morning cigar in some UA Compression. Listening to the Tron Ares soundtrack while enjoying a triple espresso.

I found his obsession with physical appearance=warrior ethos baffling. My uncle served alongside the Royal Gurkha Rifles during the Malayan Emergency & Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation. He said they had an average height of only 5’3 but they were the best & bravest jungle fighters he had ever seen.

Many thanks to the Reading Ex British Gurkha Association (REBGA) for hosting yesterday’s Dashain event. The evening included colourful displays of traditional dancing as well as scarves being presented to recognise people for their community service. 🧵1/2

Ex-Gurkha Dhan Gurung on hunger strike in London, trying to get a fair pension after risking his life fighting for this country. The policy on removing Indefinite Leave to Remain which Farage has just announced would result in veteran Gurkhas all being deported. Reform is an appalling party.

I met a very proud old Gurkha in a small hill town in Nepal 80s…he showed us his uniform and his khukuri

his family generously (clearly they were materially poor) insisted we share their meal, we did so sitting around a fire inside the shack

few words were exchanged but there was much singing*

How do you write an authentic Gurkha character? Hannah Watson shares how she used oral histories and the help of veteran JP Cross (pic1 on 100 bday) to develop Taman. She even includes a real lament: "My clothes become wet on my body, they dry on my body, that way I become old quickly" #Gurkhas #ww2

How do friendships form across ranks in war? In her novel, Hannah Watson explores the bond between a young Brit, Jim, his Anglo-Burmese friend Ralph, and an experienced Gurkha: Taman. Their friendship is forged through shared trauma, like the pivotal and devastating disaster at the Sittang Bridge
