Cryptwork #9:

Girl in Brompton Cemetery, London, 2010.

I was visiting when I looked behind me to see something strange: a girl in a Victorian bustle dress quickly making her way down the path.

I had only one chance to shoot her as she drifted past me like a spirit 🖤 #gothic #gothicadvent

If unexpected guests turn up at your door at midnight during the Christmas season, you might want to check out their feet before letting anyone in — most likely, they have hooves.

(an old East Slavic superstition)

Balcombe sued the film company for copyright infringement of Dracula - successfully - and the court ordered for all copies of Nosferatu to be destroyed.

While most copies were destroyed, a few remained in the foreign markets, hence why the film is still viewable today. 2/2

It was once believed unlucky to bring holly into the house before Christmas Eve and leave up after Twelfth Night. If you did so, you ran the risk of every berry and leaf transforming into a naughty spirit... #GothicAdvent #Solstice

When winter’s breath chills the Tyburn, it whispers as the gallows stir. On Advent nights, beneath the frost-bitten moon, echoes of creaking ropes and spectral jigs haunt the air. The Tyburn Tree, they say, remembers its dead.

On Ǣfen-Gēola (Yule Eve), shadows lengthen as this world and the other combine, just before Modraniht (Mother’s Night). The moon god, Mōna, casts his cold light upon the world, guiding mothers through the tangled threads of the Wyrd.

Scrooge's 'usual melancholy tavern' where he takes his 'melancholy dinner' on #Christmas Eve has been identified as Simpson's Tavern in Ball Court, City of London. It has been trading since 1757 & is still there today. #BookWormSat #GothicAdvent #folklore #literature #books #London #Yule

According to an old Norwegian superstition, if there is no church in your village, you have to shoot a firearm 3 times into the air at the time when bells are supposed to ring after the sunset on Christmas Eve.

It helps scare away Åsgårdsreia (The Wild Hunt).

Byron was partly responsible for some of the concepts since he and Polidori had collaborated, but the work was mostly Polidori's undertaking.

Prior to this, vampires in #folklore were thought of as vicious, savage creatures one would not dare to think of as romantic. 2/2 #gothic #gothicadvent

Norway used to have many superstitions about December 13.
E.g. animals can talk on that night, water can be turned into wine and and young girls can see their future husbands if they're fasting. And if you look out the window, you may get scared by trolls...

In Eastern Europe, Christmas is the time of folk-magic.

In Belarus on St. Andrew's day, girls used to sow hemp seeds near their homes: if all of them grew up in the spring, it meant a happy marriage, if none of them did, it meant the girl who had sowed them would die.

Tonight comes Lussi The Troll with her lussiferda — the army of critters.
She will taste your beer and lefse, and punish those whose house isn't ready for Christmas.

Draw a tar cross on each door and window, and keep the light on!

St Lucy /Lucia revered for her gift of sight is often seen in Gothic art holding a dish with two eyes on it. She carries the palm branch, a symbol of martyrdom and victory over evil. The feast on this day, Dec 13th is also the beginning of Scandanavian Christmas. #GothicAdvent #FolkyFriday #Legends

Day 8 of the #HooklandChristmasTree has us pulling the Apple Man from the box, finding him a branch. A painted china charm of him sleeping in his tree, a group of boys at its base whipping and hollering to wake him. How else to get apples for roasted cider to feed the Bone Horse?

#GothicAdvent Day 5 -- Extract from the Forme of Yuletide:
Christmas Eve is the night for ghosts,
Or so the cunning folk say,
Our family members from long ago,
Leave rest and come to stay.

For the nights are cold and the shadows long
And the dead just want to play...

I prefer the folklore figure of Old Father Christmas to Santa Claus: more ancient, more wild, more pagan.
I love these drawings with wassail bowl of spiced ale, holly crown, Yule log and Yule Goat
