A number of #gaphaz members, including glaciologists from #Tajikistan, are investigating a sequence of catastrophic #detachments from #Didal glacier following sudden, #surge like accelerations this summer and fall. Stay tuned for more!

It is pretty interesting to read some of the commentary on future sea level rise from the 1950s. This was from a symposium held in the Netherlands in 1954, before many of the aspects of climate change were fully understood, including Milankovich theory and CO₂ changes. #ClimateChange #SeaLevelChange

Your 'moment of doom' for Nov. 4, 2025 ~ Fast times!

It's v hard to tell but it might be Didal Glacier, which is surge-type and actually was surging in the months prior to this video. I don't know if something switched allowing the runaway mode seen in the video. Curious for thoughts of other glaciologists 🧪⚒️❄️ www.planet.com/stories/dida...

Trying to get more connected on here - any (other) glaciologists / snow scientists / sea-ice scientists / cryo-neds on this app that I should be following? Tag your cool friends! (Yes, that pun was intentional.)

Great weekend catching up on what glaciologists are up to and providing some hydro context at the Northwest Glaciologist Meeting! Thanks a lot to @watershedlab.bsky.social and @glasheologist.bsky.social for the organization ❄️

40+ glaciologists just published a paper calling geoengineering to save the Arctic & Antarctic a dangerous distraction.
But other scientists argue that with ice melting we at least need to research them.

For some reason I wrote climatologists rather than glaciologists, but maybe that would’ve been too much of a giveaway?

‘Until recently, glaciologists in the Alps used to consider 2% of ice lost in a single year to be "extreme".

Then 2022 blew that idea out of the water, with nearly 6% of Switzerland's remaining ice lost in a single yr.

…significant losses in 2023, 2024 & 2025 too’
