He did well, and he served with bravery and honor, but he did not come home to a public life and high office. He left that to his friend and stayed happily in his shadow all with the belief that by doing so I might one day have such grand things as those on this sacred hill did. I didn't want them. How could I explain to my father and mother how little I wanted them? There was something heartless about the world of politics and war. I was a trained soldier now and while I have served as expected there was no love in me for it. The Legate, my father's friend, was a man carved in the image of Mars. He was born for war and battle, this great bear of a man whose voice I can easily imagine echoing across a battlefield. He had a secret though, a secret his son and I saw with our own eyes. We knew why he left that life.
