https://www.invaluable.com/auction-lot/ervine-metzl-1899-1963-the-peristyle-north-end-gr-%20%20%20%20122-c-2ea4e2684d: ‘Influenced by the cut-out style of Britain's Beggarstaff Brothers, Metzl's posters stood out from those of other young graphic designers working for the Chicago rapid transit & train campaigns. He went on to become a prolific illustrator & author of a 1963 book *The Poster*. He was also appointed head of the first Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee, established to advise the Postmaster General on improving the design & colors of American stamps. H.K. Frenzel, writing in Gebrauchsgraphik on August 1, 1930 says, "there is also a solemn romanticism in his treatment of color. He is fond of an indefinite bluish-green & warm, broken tones of brown which remove real objects into regions of romance & the blue-gray twilight hour." Chicago's original peristyle, designed by Edward H. Bennet, sat at the north end of Grant Park (what is today Wrigley Square). It was razed in 1953.’

How's that for an owl? Wonderful poster by Busso Malchow, using the owl that was the symbol of the Ullstein publishing house, for the newly launched UHU magazine is reproduced in a 1925 issue of Gebrauchsgraphik. #graphicdesign #owl #germany

A bright red owl on a bold yellow background with the magazine title "UHU" in bold & underneath "Das neue Ullstein-Magazin". This wonderful poster by Busso Malchow, using the owl that was the symbol of the Ullstein publishing house, is reproduced in a 1925 issue of Gebrauchsgraphik. In 1924 the well known Berlin publishing house of Ullstein launched a new magazine UHU. The issues published In the decade of its existance are now regarded as important documents of the social history of the Weimar period.

A press advert from 1937 for London Transport's Commercial Advertising Dept. This stylish design shows a roundel headed figure, the 'body' consisting of crowds, selling the idea of LT and passengers as consumers and uses clever typography to complete the design. The headline reads "A Poster" (on the bar of the roundel) "is seen better through London Transport" the latter text being ranged across the poster. It is by Zero - Hans Schleger, the Polish-German-Jewish designer who had worked in the UK since 1932 and who became a renowned designer and artist who did much work for London Transport including the redesign of the capital's bus stop design in 1936. The advert appears in Gebrauchsgraphik for March 1937, the then renowned German journal for 'international advertising art'. The magazine had been founded in Berlin in 1924 by Dr. H.K. Frenzel and continued to be published in an eviscerated form after the 1933 rise to power of the National Socialist dictatorship and the censorship of publications.
