4th instar caterpillar upside down on grass. Pale legs and undebody, darker upper body Newly pupated, the larger lower part of the pupa is yellow, the upper is orange. It's rounded at the bottom and pointed at the top Now fully hardened it's a rich golden brown and after a few days turned dark brown It eclosed too late on Saturday for me to release it, shooting out a huge volume of left over meconium which showed it had just finished inflating its wings. It spent the night safely in the fridge, posed for photos this morning and quickly hid in the little pine tree.

Mrs HBHM investigating the Gallium which decided to grow itself in the Primrose, Cowslip and Pulmonaria garden 2 years ago. I didn't find any eggs in this dense mass of greenery but absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence is it? After all her effort I could only hope. I had never seen this before, Mrs HBHM actually laying an egg on MY wall while I watched and recorded the event. I found 4 of these beautiful and tiny pale green globes just inches above the Gallium. Sadly the next day they had been predated. C'est la vie, but I don't have to like it, would have enjoyed raising these little moths.

A very poor shot of what I think is a 20 or many plume moth in my garden. What I think is a tiny Straw Dot moth seen on Millennium Fields York. It's yellow with a dark patch on the forewing. Seen deep in the long grasses so quite a tight crop. Millennium Fields, York. In August 2019, I found my first Brown Argus on this site. I counted 8 that day, the most I'd ever seen anywhere. Each year there would be about 6 and 2 broods. 2024 I saw several couples in Spring, so was hopeful for a good second brood. Unfortunately the heavy winter/spring rains resulted in overly enthusiastic grasses to swamp the tiny breeding area. This year's heat and lack of rain meant the Dovesfoot Cranesbill, the larval food plant, did not survive. But today I found some small patches in an area which has been cleared and seeded with wildflowers. I haven't seen any Brown Argus butterflies, but maybe there is hope again. The plant is low lying with tiny pink flowers. Very distant and heavily cropped shot of a Green Veined White butterfly, MIllennium Fields, York. The green veins can just be seen on the underwing.

ADELA REAUMURELLA Green Longhorn moth. 14-18mm wingspan In this image, the body of the moth is low centre and the very long horns extend on the right almost to the top of the image. The left is more curved A fairly tight crop of a stacked image (4 shots, differential 5 f10, I can no longer hold the lens & extender combination long enough for more shots and smaller differential unless I'm sitting) There a distict metallic sheen to the upper wings, the eye is deep red and the long scales on the head look like unruly black hair Another stacked image showing a little of the metallic bronze underwing and the cream edge of the lower upper wing. The upper part of the long second left leg shows metallic blue and red scales. The antennae are straight out to the sides here. A crop of the previous shot more clearly showing the red and blue upper leg and the long cream scales that fringe the inner edge of the upper wings. There were only 3 males today, 12 yesterday, but these three were quite happy to sit and pose for posterity.
