To mark the 85th SVP Meeting 2025, we've assembled an open access collection of landmark JSP vertebrate palaeontology papers.

Next, Friedman (2007) investigates 𝙎𝙩𝙮𝙡𝙤𝙞𝙘𝙝𝙩𝙝𝙮𝙨, the oldest known coelacanth — and early bony fish relationships buff.ly/EGlBuN3

New paper in JSP: Gonçalves & Luccisano reassess the taxonomy and phylogeny of Aeduellidae, Carboniferous ray-finned fish from Decazeville Basin, France 🐟
Results hint at a North American origin… or convergent traits that muddy the family waters.

A new study shows that the earliest gobioid fishes were coral-reef associated dwarfs. Results suggest that dwarf gobies achieved ecological success early in gobioid evolution, arising through convergent evolution across different lineages🐟 Read more: buff.ly/GVMpJaF

Earliest gobioid fishes were coral-reef associated dwarfs: New evidence from the Eocene of Monte Bolca, Italy
The earliest skeleton-based gobioid fish, the minute goby †Carlomonnius quasigobius Bannikov and Carnevale, 2016 (13 mm standard length), originates from the Lower Eocene coral reef fish assemblage...

I've had this fossil for years and I still don't know what it is or if it's one that could be ID'ED to a genus. It's a small #rayfinnedfish #fossil, just over 2 cm long, though it was longer with the rest of it which is gone.

Just finished this lovely little fish. My client bought it at a fossil show in Munich, they were originally from Lebanon. But we don't have more information.

Check out the latest paper on a jawless fossil fish, and this time we were able to recreate a full 3D model! Thank you Lisa Schnetz, @nitroshutter.bsky.social, @gilespalaeo.bsky.social, @euphanerops.bsky.social et al. for having me on this

Imagine a salmon, but 8 ft long. Now add tusks like a wild boar. Meet Oncorhynchus rastrosus
Giant prehistoric salmon had tusk-like teeth, just like a warthog's
The largest salmon species ever discovered, Oncorhynchus rastrosus may have used its distinctive, tusk-like teeth to compete with rivals, defend against predators and dig nests.

“It’s incredible to see the skeleton of Tiktaalik captured in such vivid detail...This study sets the stage for ones that explore how the animal moved about...”

"The researchers explained that, unlike our own hips where our bones fit tightly together, the connection between the pelvis and axial skeleton of Tiktaalik was likely a soft-tissue connection made of ligaments."
