Many Greek gods are linked to birds - Zeus's eagle, Athena's owl, Apollo's raven, etc. At one time ravens had white feathers, but when a raven delivered Apollo bad news, the sun god was so enraged that his heat charred the bird's feathers. Now all ravens are black.

In Norse mythology, valkyries would take vacations from their duties by putting on magic cloaks of swan feathers, and flying around the Earth as swans. They would alight in hidden pools, take on human form to bathe, and punish any mortals who saw them there.

In Scottish Highlands lore, a lone 'Death Crow' (Clacharan) calls harshly near the hearth in winter, foretelling loss in the home.
Yet massive winter murders gather in bare branches, cawing secrets & omens of fate, black against snow as harbingers from the Otherworld.

In Turkey penguins are a symbol of protest: in 2013 during the Gezi Park protests, CNN Turk showed a documentary about penguins. Uniting left and right concerns against the growing authoritarianism of the current regime, penguins became a symbol of fighting back #FairytaleTuesday

In Maori folklore, Fiordland penguins are called tawaki. Walking amongst humanity as a human, the penguin spirit announced itself by taking lightning from the sky and wearing it on its head: that is why these penguins have striking yellow marks. #FairytaleTuesday

In medieval bestiaries, birds were moral lessons with wings. Swans symbolized purity, owls sin or wisdom, and penguins would surely have been saints of endurance. #FairyTaleTuesday

Did you know the word 'penguin' is derived from the Welsh 'pen gwyn', meaning white head?
The term was first used to describe the now-extinct great auk of Newfoundland, which was identified by the distinctive white markings on its head.

Penguins were named before scientists ever saw one. Early sailors applied the name of a now-extinct bird to these upright wanderers of ice, proving folklore often precedes fact. #FairyTaleTuesday
