Huge thanks to Seb and the ACMI team for a superb #FACT2026. I’ll be writing it up for @thepointau.bsky.social in coming days or likely next week. We’ve rocketed through a great deal and we’ve done it together. There is so much good work to be done 🙏

And Sam quite rightly highlights our relative privilege. This isn’t Iran. We shouldn’t have writers festivals and journals who pre-censor. This is not normal. Funding bodies need to be at the centre of that conversation and not part of the problem. Only then can we rebuild. Come on. #FACT2026

Is 'exhaustion' the new norm for cultural workers?? 🤔

#FACT2026
And now it’s time to wrap up #FACT2026. Kate: we need to stop learning the wrong lessons. Learn from those who failed before us. We’re losing more people from the arts than joining. We have no tolerance for what’s unnecessary. Make it better. We’re exhausted. Which is why we need to come together.

Nick acknowledges the crisis in arts education. A ticking time bomb. Now is the time to change the conversation. Set a long-term agenda for what we want the sector to be. We can do this. #FACT2026

The "save us" mentality just won't cut it anymore!

This was a good (and fiesty!) panel to end the day

Such an important advocacy point Nick is making. The “save us” mentality creates zero political capital from our social capital. We need to be well-connected among the sector, clear and strategic. Look to the sectors whose advocacy succeeds. They’re not constantly asking to be saved. #FACT2026

Nick talks investment, not funding. A “save us” approach never works. I don’t know why it keeps happening. It turns decision-makers off. It’s a deficit and loss mindset. We need to emphasise the multiplier effect. What we unlock. We have massive social capital. We are loved by communities. #FACT2026

Let’s also emphasise authentic social participation, says Sam. At a visceral level. Actual people getting involved and what they’re actually doing. We also need a deeper understand who our actual stakeholders are. Developing deep understandings, not ticking a box. #FACT2026
February 12, 2026 at 5:42 AM
Please stop generating nonsense value statements – integrity, walking, breathing – that don’t actually reflect your purpose! says Sam. Your function and your purpose are not the same thing. Why do you exist? What’s your social and cultural context? Why this, here, now? Take it seriously. #FACT2026
February 12, 2026 at 5:40 AM
The corporatisation of the bigger arts orgs, says Sam, have boards that aren’t even paid. So there’s the desire to appoint well-connected business people who just don’t understand governance in its ethics or its practice. A token artist or young person doesn’t break that poor culture. #FACT2026
February 12, 2026 at 5:38 AM
Kate is making a huge lot of sense!

Boards need to be brave to unlearn, takes energy but exciting trigger knowing that current models don't work and we don't need to follow current governance practices

#FACT2026
We’ve got more flexibility to explore governance practices than we think, says Kate. A lot of the ageing models we use are actually optional. Sustainability is ouch and burnout is real. The high-profile governance failures are more and more frequent and entirely avoidable. Embrace change. #FACT2026
February 12, 2026 at 5:38 AM
We need a bigger definition of governance, says Kate. Who is around the table? Do we even need a table? Are the actual decision-makers actually in the room? Bring the board to the rehearsal room: forget nonsense moving and seconding! Design something that serves us now and into the future. #FACT2026

We’re not anti-tech, says Nick. We’re not luddites. Artists are innovators. We make that clear in our campaign work. We start from a sophisticated base. And I insist on a strong Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Property focus. I’ve commissioned cutting-edge research from the world’s best. #FACT2026
February 12, 2026 at 5:30 AM
Leading the AI fight is Nick’s other big focus. Everyone with IP needed to come together. Big tech tried to astroturf their way in years ago when they tried to water down our copyright laws. We stared them down then and we’ll do it again. Credit, consent, compensation. That’s the campaign. #FACT2026
