In particular, spatial structure. Vision and hearing are also more obviously exteroceptive, enabling us to sense remote objects or events, whereas touch, taste, smell and the bodily senses are more proximal in nature (though with some exceptions arguably still qualify as exteroception).

Interoception vs. Exteroception: Cardiac interoception competes with tactile perception, yet also facilitates self-relevance encoding
Internal bodily signals, notably the heartbeat, influence our perception of the external world - but the nature of this influence remains unclear. One line of evidence (Competition) indicates that…

(Step 2) Plans that lead to “reward button got pressed” seem good. (Post scope is actor-critic model-based RL, so we’re choosing plans not actions.)
But “reward button got pressed” is exteroception not interoception—the AI has a video feed of the button (by assumption in §1).

Another excellent talk from @mtsakiris.bsky.social, discussing the origins of selfhood and the interoceptive body as the first prior. Combining exteroception and interoception to understand the sense of self - what more could you ask for? 😉 #selfRS2025

The sensory world consists of:
Exteroception (the 5 senses we're all familiar with)
Interoception (internal sensations - pain, hunger, arousal, toilet)
Proprioception/vestibular (body perception and balance)
To this we could add the sensations of danger, heat and more but there isn't room!

Surely the brain would itself be a system of systems that interact via interoception with a system of systems inside the organism and via exteroception with another system of systems outside the organism. Then you need to start identifying the various systems and figure out how they all interact.

So from my perspective, interoception and exteroception aren’t fundamentally different. The data for both go to the cortex, where they contribute to the world-model. AND they both also go to the hypothalamus & brainstem, where they trigger innate reflexes & reactions, including reward signals.

Visual interoception is real!
At least, this is a serious implication of this new computationally-based account of the distinction between interoception and exteroception
A fascinating read 👍

18. receptors of the somatosensory system
somatosensory systems have three components:
- exteroception (sense of external world)
- interoception (sense of internal state)
- proprioception (sense of oneself in relation to the world)
we've learned a lot about all of these in the last 10-15 years!
