Dawntrail had one final laugh at my expense. I've been told the post-MSQ gets better. Ngl this was rough, most of the time. Looking forward to Wuk Lamat getting memory holed harder than Hilda. Or maybe harder than Krile or Erenville did, IN THE STORY THEY WERE FEATURED IN.

It's clear from this memory that Irein is mostly unable to set aside her own feelings in the moment. Her eyes are still hidden from the camera, but she bites her thumb in discomfort. Unseen, Erenville and Irein continue their conversation in the present. Irein: I l-like to think of g-grief in the s-same way you do a c-canker sore. Erenville: A canker sore? Irein: At first, no ma-matter what you d-do, you c-can't avoid the p-pain. You c-cant eat, you can't sp-speak, you're obsessed with p-p-poking it, making sure it's st-still there even though you kn-know it is. Erenville: I'm following you. Irein: The p-pain is so per-persistent that it c-consumes all your thoughts. So much so th-that you think 'This is th-th-the rest of m-my life, isn't it?' and you'll have to always na-navigate your li-life around it. Erenville: But canker sores heal. The present moment again. Irein smiles ruefully, hand lifted in explanation while Erenville mulls over her words. Irein: That's the p-p-point. Sl-Slowly, like all things do, you heal. You're still a-aware of the pain, but it b-bothers you less and l-less. And then, one d-day, that p-pain you thought w-would de-define your life...it st-stops hurting. You w-wonder how long the pain was g-gone for, be-because you don't re-remember it stopping in the f-first place. Erenville: And then you're okay, after that? Irein: For a l-long, long wh-while...yes. The memory resumes. Irein moves behind the cart in the Xobr'it Cinderfields out of view of Wuk Lamat and Hunmu Rruk. She clenches her right fist, left hand up to her head to clutch her flower crown- the very one her father died trying to find for her. She remembers seeing him in the Aetherial Sea, and mourns quietly to herself. In the present, Irein explains her thesis on grief- Irein: But th-the thing about c-canker sores...is th-that they al-always come back.

Erenville turns his head down over Irein's shoulder, eyes screwing shut. He takes a deep breath. Erenville: How do- /shite/- No, that's not- Irein: T-T-Take as long as y-you n-need. The camera pans out, Erenville lifting his head to ask his inquiry, coming out as less a question and more an observation. Irein rubs the back of her head, thinking. Erenville: Even now, you said you weren't sure how to handle the loss. Irein: That's be-because it comes and g-goes. Most d-days, it goes. Erenville: And the days it comes? A flashback. Irein watches as Wuk Lamat speaks to Hunmu Rruk from a distance. They are getting to know each other for the first time, as daughter and father after so many years. Irein speaks over the memory. Irein: De-Depends. S-Sometimes, I can p-put it aside.

It's raining in Tuliyollal. Curled up together on a recliner in the Forard Cabins, Erenville and Irein sit watching the dreary weather. They're dressed in comfortable pajamas, the camera facing their backs. Erenville: ...Mmm, Reen? Irein: Yes? The camera turns around, closer. Irein has her knees drawn up while Erenville rests in the crook of her shoulder. He loops one arm under Irein's, seeking comfort in her being close. Erenville: We...We never spoke much of your father in the past, did we? Irein: No...w-we d-d-didn't. Erenville: I never wished to press the matter. You already had a fraught relationship with your mother...I had merely assumed the same of him. The camera cuts closer, Irein's face in profile and eyes hidden. She still smiles at Erenville, who can't meet her hidden gaze. Irein: I was e-eleven. He'd b-b-been gone for th-three years. 'F-Fraught' isn't that far off, I th-think. Erenville: Even so...I can't help but feel badly that the first time I ask is only after... Irein: I kn-know. Ask an-anyway.
