and they'll be even LESS likely to listen to the facts we all wish they would listen to.
Empathy means taking their perspective. If you don't, you antagonize rather than invite. Your fights end with both sides believing the other is even WORSE. We're the "good guys." It's OUR cycle to break.

Yes! How do we stop this from continuing? This is what happens when children don't learn social emotional skills, especially empathy and perspective taking. We end up with adults like this.

We often talk about empathy &critical thinking skills needed to do perspective taking
But there is 1 other factor missing in far too much of US in why ppl blindly believe things or cave into biases like confirmation bias…
A blatant lack of curiosity

I’m working on this too! Developing my cognitive empathy and perspective taking abilities is an ongoing process for me.

Be humble. It’s good for learning and your relationships.
Intellectual humility may also help us smooth over and forgive differences and is associated with a better mood and a sense of closeness.

I believe we need to actually focus specifically on social and emotional skills in education and not just on "hard skills."
I also believe that we need to teach skills relevant to empathy and compassion, such as perspective taking.

Are some white men capable of empathy and perspective-taking?
Yes.
Do we as a society require it of them the way we require it of everyone else?
No.
Ergo if they’re willing to have a podcast without people from other backgrounds to help correct for that, the podcast is about their egos.

I’m starting to understand this myself. It’s also a perspective-taking and cognitive empathy thing for me as well. If I hope that my friends are understanding when I do happen to be annoying or make a mistake, then I need to extend the same courtesy to them. Communication is still key, but yeah!

So I can do some type of intuitive empathy perspective taking when I see someone do something dangerous on social media, even though I largely can't do that intuitive feeling in everyday social relationships.

In my opinion that's why it's important to remember that neurotypical is less a type of person and more a set of expectations we can't reach.
Though with the taking other's perspective thing, I think the double empathy problem shows everyone is worse at that then they think. Autistic or not.
