A photo of a peso issued by the Japanese during the occupation of the Philippines. My grandmother and her family fled Manilla during the occupation and were living in a farm in a rural village. Her brother was in the resistance and had been home for Christmas visiting. He’d left to go back fighting, but forgot his gun. A Japanese patrol came to the village looking for resistance fighters and food. Knowing that being found with a weapon they would be killed my grandmother had my oldest aunt 6 or 7 at the time hide the gun before they reached the house. She hid it in a rice barrel. The soldiers not finding resistance fighters began looting food. As they started scooping rice out of the barrel my grandma, 9 months pregnant with my father, pretended to swoon and faked entering labor. The soldiers wanting nothing to do with “women’s” troubles stoped taking rice and left; the gun was undiscovered. My dad was born on January 8th. They all moved to the US shortly after the war ended.
