My favorite is this esoteric gene lets us suggest our solid assumptions about specialized metabolism evolution may not be so solid.

What if distal gene duplications are most important?
What if synteny based orthology misleads greatly?
What if genes loss is rapid, rampant and independent?

It took some macrosynteny detective work and tracking down the closest homologs to even get a partial idea of how distal gene duplications expanded and diversified gene content across these species. And after all that, we still have no idea where one of the clades came from!

After gene and genome duplications, expression divergence across cell types is not random, and it can be explained by a combination of gene age, gene funct

Welcome to the world of scientific sleuths and whistleblowers! Don't want to scare you, but there are papers with dozens of image duplications that I reported in Sep 2024 that are still not taken care of by editors, for ex: pubpeer.com/publications...
Patience is much needed in this job...

Moral of the story: Insurance companies compete to offer best group rates and cannot charge duplications.

10/12 These anchors were critical. They gave us a window to map the complex structural changes (like duplications and deletions) happening in this locus. Without them, we couldn't have confidently made our observations about the scale of rearrangement in the cluster.

Yikes! This is higher than we are seeing in #PlantScience and will probably drop now that many journals are using software such as #Proofig and #ImageTwin to find duplications as a final screen just prior to publication.
Our new paper is out in PLOS Biology! I'm very conflicted about the project: proud because it feels like the most important project I've ever been a part of, but also very sad that we found so many problems in our field.

Read the paper here: journals.plos.org/plosbiology/...
