the same day Vancouver city council voted to approve $17M in increased VPD spending, they couldn't find $1M of ~taxpayer~ funds for the DTES Community Land Trust to buy a property

Are you being sentimental on North Main in the DTES, or South Main up in Mt Pleasant?
November 1, 2025 at 9:10 AM
oh "The proposed VPD budget amendments have been approved by the Vancouver Police Board"? WHEN DID THAT HAPPEN?

why isn't the police board making this request of council? why is the city doing this on their behalf (contrary to the police act)

in other words, what the fuck is this bullshit

GOOD NEWS! PACE, which supports street-based sex workers in Van, got their charitable status back. That means it can accept donations and issue tax receipts again. Likely a bit of time before they can re-start programming or drop-in services, but still an important step for a vital DTES resource.

My bf was working at a supportive housing for queer youth in the DTES, and he was trying to keep drug dealers from coming in to deal inside. One of them cornered him in an alley, stuck a gun in his face and said "google me."
Weapons, violence, drugs: Life at the West Hotel, where crime group was dismantled by VPD
"That block has been infiltrated by drug dealers and those carrying out gang-related crime," West Hotel owner Chris Wall says

Side eyes in DTES resident. Maybe some of that money could go to...I dunno, mental health support and housing programs?

Larry Campbell is the new DTES czar and I remember him well in the years I struggled in the DTES.

He was a strong advocate for harm reduction services like supervised consumption sites and his administration focused on health approaches instead of punishment.

Good morning everyone. I'll be on Jill Bennett @CKNW news radio 📻 at 12:15 today talking about the new DTES czar and the challenges we face with the deadly toxic drug supply, addiction, mental health and homelessness. Tune in if you can. I'll break it down. #bcpoli

wait, why would you plug terminals (DTEs) into your computer (a DTE)
September 10, 2024 at 7:15 PM
And why the focus on a single neighbourhood? It feels like moralizing about the DTES to misdirect from the fact that inequality has continued to grow on his watch. Behind the mirage, we know Ken Sim is eager to find new ways to give away even more to his billionaire friends

Exposed: Ken Sim's secret plans for the DTES.

It has nothing to do with helping people, and everything to do with finding new ways to help his billionaire pals make windwall profits off land speculation.

Sim is launching a new strategy to "fix" the DTES, in classic simple form.

Of his three proposed policy shifts "Cracking down on gang activity" makes a great clip- but not exactly a city service: rather police, province, justice system.

The other two policies belie a dangerous intent #VANPOLI🧵

I'm not sure if the movie "Locked" is actually set in Vancouver or just filmed here, but it features a down on his luck car thief who tries to steal a bait car from the DTES and is tortured by the rich owner of the car who lives in a Woodwards condo www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGTi...
