A poem about a recurring nightmare and how dreams bleed into reality and vice versa.
Nursery The cow jumps over the moon and the little dog laughs. Everything is as blue as crushed delphiniums, harvestbells, the finespun veins of God’s translucent wrist, sylph and spider’s silk, atropine. The languid drip of ketamine, like drops of dew wisp-watering the surface of the naiad’s brook. The slow crawl of propofol that makes me laugh; I count down from infinity and disappear. In the dream I forget everything and time becomes a swimming pool, turquoise molasses and gossamer tulle, meaning nothing, shiny as quartz. In the dream I forget that you must die. There is a road that I must cross, long and twisted like licorice. There is a veil through which I must reach like a birch bough for your outstretched hand. And when our fingertips touch, I remember and the remembering is as quick and absolute as a headshot or a deer crashing into the glittering windshield of your car. Something like icicles shattering, or teeth, or the thin viscera between you and reality. And this is what I do in the dream: I scream because that is all I can translate this terror into: the pure white flash shock of grief, the utterly wordless rupture of every seam I have ever stitched in the dark. The cow jumps over the moon right into the mouth of the meat grinder. The cow’s calf is taken away from her and she howls and bellows until her vocal chords rip and spew blood. The calf has two heads so it is sainted right between its long-lashed eyes with the hard red rapture of a cattle gun. The little dog does not laugh anymore. The little dog has been abandoned, kicked, left to starve to a gaunt ghost in the streets. The little dog is a puppy in a plastic bag suffocating on the bottom of the trash container. You die a thousand times and I must watch. Around every corner that I stumble, I find your body slumped over like a praying child with your head resting on the cold stone floor where your brain has trickled a halo. And sometimes I continue screaming even after I have woken up.

11. Let Somebody else’s shoes walk a mile inside me. Footprints mark my internal skin. Sun dries the marks into prints sold on the street corners of my eyes. Easels of my breath illustrate speed of light to passers by who throw ideas of change synaptic rivulets, neuron canals, sacred water riverbrain flows in my head, fountainbrain channels my ideas, lakebrain plays the fey, electric rivulets move earth.

I Found Another's Old ribcage in the loft. It had been used as an aviary. Webs had been spun from one rib to another. Between the cushions on the sofa I found another's last breath. It hung in the threads like a mist. Yesterday, moved books on the shelf and found another's spine. All vertebrae intact. I counted. It was laid down as if asleep. I could assemble another's body if I wished but prefer to see them as ornaments to be rediscovered.

I dreamed that I loved you, once. I dreamed the taste of salt on your skin, the soft sweetness of lips on mine and venturing lower, the strength of your arms as you'd steady me. I even dreamed of making love to you, effortlessly while standing in the middle of a lake. We made loving look easy and fluid. Somehow, it made sense to us at the time. We stretched moments into miles, crossed the walls we had erected to keep our hearts safe from harm, but then… I woke up. Dream waters of love ephemeral illusions soundless when they fade.

A Tree Is a walking cloud unloading bucketfuls when it rises into autumn. Trees move from canthus to canthus. Conkers are droplets, a spiny splash A castle, a dragon, a hand reaching, shapes gust blown in the skies of its branches. Each a strand of cloud. Look for the darkening bark of a rain tree. Look for the whisps, horses tails, salmon shaped twigs. When berries fall from the grain of clouds, trees are wet with sweetness, but beware the red rain berries. Clouds are the masts of the skies forest.

One Fish Leaps out top then plops back into my fish bowl head. It is my inner fish. My world turns on the horn of a cow. The cow stands on one fish. I dream one fish leaps out top of my fish bowl head. I hope my hair doesn't get wet. My fish in flight elicits a smile, My fish in water makes me fret. How to keep the flight long haul, A higher jump, a practiced glide.

Loss I used to dream of your grave, the cemetery undayed kneeling, my fingers running through sickened grass: clumps nourished by your cancer, scrambling downwards, a crescent of mud waxing under every nail, my hands bloody and blackened: they must match your own, this dream reaches wetted wood, your lid now weak as rushes and as I tenderly part the softened splinters, only bones distant traffic pounds like a subterranean heart, sizing up the choice, I strike tibia against fibula hard: just to make you spark again.

The Apology You said I left you in your dreams. I left you for another man. I asked what he was like. That wasn’t the response you wanted. I tried reassuring you, but it was too late. You were grouchy all morning. I went to work without a kiss. It didn’t feel right. So I came home with flowers and that nice chocolate you like, and a silly little card saying sorry for my mistake. and apologised that your dream version of me wasn’t all you dreamed of.
