#30: Justice For Bonnie 17 Years Later
On September 28, 1994, eighteen-year-old Bonnie Craig disappeared while walking to catch the bus to her classes at the University of Alaska Anchorage. That afternoon, her body was discovered floating in the water at McHugh Creek. Alaska State Troopers initially ruled her death a hiking accident, but her mother Karen knew immediately—this was murder. When Karen received the devastating phone call at 3 AM while on a boat in Florida, more than 3,000 miles from home, she demanded answers. Despite evidence of sexual assault, defensive wounds, and eleven blunt force trauma injuries to Bonnie's head, the case went cold. For seventeen years, Karen fought for justice, transforming from a reserve police officer into a relentless advocate who would change DNA legislation across the United States. In 2007, a breakthrough finally came. A DNA match through the CODIS database. This is the story of Bonnie Craig—a dedicated student, loyal girlfriend, and protective older sister who carried pepper spray on her keychain. It's also the story of her mother's extraordinary mission to ensure no other family would wait as long for justice. Keywords: Bonnie Craig murder, Alaska cold case, CODIS DNA database, McHugh Creek, Karen Foster advocacy, DNA on arrest legislation, Alaska State Troopers cold case, 1994 unsolved murder solved, true crime podcast, cold case solved by DNA Content Warning: This episode contains discussions of sexual assault, violence, and murder. Appeals court questions trial record on defendant'led defense and access to CODIS data in Commonwealth v. Hempel
In Commonwealth v. Hempel, defense counsel argued the trial judge improperly encouraged a defendant to question witnesses and effectively permitted him to waive counsel without a colloquy; the panel pressed on whether the record demonstrates a knowing waiver. Counsel also urged the court to order release of CODIS database analysis to defense, a fre

"The Tourniquet Killer: Anthony Shore's 20-Year Reign of Terror"
For two decades, a monster stalked the streets of Houston, Texas, leaving a trail of tortured victims and baffled investigators. Anthony Shore appeared to be the perfect neighbor – a married father, computer technician, and phone company employee who helped his community. But behind his ordinary facade lurked one of America's most sadistic serial killers, whose signature method of strangulation would earn him the chilling nickname "The Tourniquet Killer." In this bone-chilling episode of Criminal Empire: Mafia Mysteries & Serial Killers, we dive deep into the twisted psyche of Anthony Shore, a predator who terrorized Houston from 1986 to 2000. Through exclusive prison interviews, detective testimonies, and forensic evidence, we expose the calculated mind of a killer who perfected his craft over decades while living a double life that fooled everyone around him. Shore's victims ranged from young children to adult women, but his method was always the same – a tourniquet fashioned from rope or cord that he used to slowly strangle his prey while satisfying his sick sexual fantasies. We examine the psychological profile of a killer who claimed his first victim at age 15 and continued killing for 20 years, evading capture through meticulous planning and an uncanny ability to blend into society. But what makes Shore's case truly terrifying is how he operated in plain sight. As a phone company employee, he had access to homes and personal information. As a father and husband, he was above suspicion. We reveal the shocking moment when DNA evidence finally connected him to multiple cold cases, and how his own family had no idea they were living with a monster. Through interviews with the detectives who caught him, the forensic experts who analyzed his crimes, and the family members who struggled to reconcile the man they knew with the killer he became, we piece together the psychology of a predator who claimed at least four lives but may have killed many more. From his troubled childhood to his final confession on death row, we explore what creates a killer who can compartmentalize murder and normal life so completely. This is the story of how evil hides in plain sight, and why Anthony Shore's case changed how law enforcement profiles serial killers. Access the complete investigation with exclusive audio recordings on Spreaker, or listen on Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and iHeartRadio. Perfect for your true crime deep dives and understanding the mind of a killer.
