#decentralisation

Did they mean ‘balkanisation,’ aka decentralisation or fragmentation? The term always seemed to be casually offensive to the peoples of the region, to me. But presumably not meaning ‘like the species in Star Trek?’ And certainly not the polymer process in tyre rubber 50y ago? Tee hee.

Blacksky tried that. Bluesky still banned a Blacksky user from Blacksky servers, because the decentralisation is fake.

"so when a bunch of techfash talk nonstop about decentralisation, you need to first home in on the hidden points of central control, cos there'll be a ton ..."
November 1, 2025 at 8:29 AM
and yet, in practice it's completely centralised and Bluesky just banned (and he's STILL banned) a Blacksky user from Blacksky servers.

The "decentralisation" is fake and a bad excuse. It's been a fake bad excuse for two and a half years now.

Sydney is famously a city where everyone has abundant local recreation. It's a pioneer in decentralisation. Totally. I'm sure of this. Totally.

Scandaleux !

What if your AI-gentrified techbro utopia is your user base's torment nexus? What happened to "you are the algorithm"? What happened to decentralisation? Maybe hold off on being so weird until after you've made it possible for us to be somewhere Link isn't banned.
We really are anti torment nexus. You can't get rid of all the torment but, you know, you gotta put in some hours to fight it
Threads on Bluesky should feel more like conversations you’d have IRL.

mastodon is a PITA as a social network *precisely* insofar as it's decentralised, because decentralisation is an anti-feature for users unless they're weird people in particular ways.

bsky is a centralised social network that says "decentralised" a lot.

I would suggest looking beyond the brochure.

Good to exchange with Vitaliy Klychko, Mayor of #Kyiv 🇺🇦.
Local democracy and governance are essential for Ukraine’s recovery and resilience.

The @coe.int, through its Action Plan and the work of the Congress, will continue to support decentralisation and reform efforts across the country.

how do you imagine strategising toward an alternative given the scale of the service? is decentralisation viable?

Well said! The win for England from Scottish independence, is the decentralisation of the WM govt and the end of the FPTP voting system. I would not presume to say what system voters in England should use, but i think they could reshape the country and hopefully rejoin the EU.

Agree and disagree - Decentralisation will mean more security issues across a wider range of services so it's up to companies to decentralise but that has costs for resilience which makes it a no go for some companies
October 20, 2025 at 7:28 PM
Decentralisation of a profitable app/service is virtually impossible in our current model of society and is harmful as it gives the provider the impression they are not responsible, and implies to the public they dont have leverage over who uses their service without fully educating on those risks.
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?
