If anything he is only depicted as malicious in Digimon Adventure, mainly because of the result of the encounter with Etemon, any other time like Frontier, or Hacker's Memory, Datamon it's actually helpful. Granted I also have the head canon that Datamon is the reason most cyborg digimon exist.
