Comparing the Canadian budget to campaign promises. The CBC doesn't mention the impact of canceling the DST, capital gains tax reduction, cancelling luxury taxes but do mention that caving on countertariffs cost Canada billions.
They also omit what *could* have been in.

Some of what's in this week's federal budget were things the Liberals ran on in the spring election campaign. Did they live up to their promises?

Remember when Mark "Elbows Up" Carney removed countertariffs on the US a month ago as a "goodwill gesture" to "restart negotiations" and literally today Trump said again in 100% seriousness that he wants to annex Canada. Glad we softened him up with all that goodwill. Makes our Elbows look very Up.

Wanna bet their economic forecast hasn't been adjusted to account for about a million fired federal workers, the US federal government defaulting on it's contractual obligations, and blanket tariffs/countertariffs on petroleum?

I wonder if the people who decided to scrap the Canadian digital tax (effectively breaking Canadian law) are the same people who chose not to implement the additional $115 billion in countertariffs. Those people need to be jettisoned.

This was a miserable watch. I’ve never felt so ashamed to be an American. I want to take to the streets. I also want to wait until the countertariffs hit to maximize effect.

The sentiment in Canada is being wildly underestimated. It's not a question of countertariffs, it's shaping up to be a grassroots boycott of everything made in USA.

It's going to take years to undo the sense of betrayal.

The countertariffs hit U.S. agriculture particularly hard, forced many rural banks to close (before deposit insurance). It took 4 years to repeal, playing a big role in the Republicans losing 101 Congressional seats and the White House in 1932. History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes.

If it hurts you, then protest your president. Or have your governors reach deals with Ontario to avoid the extra expenses. It's easy to stay idle if you are not the feeling the pain too. Furthermore, if you raly behind Donald for being punished by countertariffs, then you really aren't worth much.

Wonder how hard Tesla would be hurt by not just tariffs (they're corrupt enough to exempt themselves) or countertariffs (still have domestic market) but massive export tax to the US of some essential materials or components
March 16, 2025 at 5:36 AM
This is literally all in the realm of psychology, not economics. The only situation where tariffs are good is one where you put a tariff on potatoes and your own country immediately puts up potato farms no prob. If that doesn't happen (it doesn't and countertariffs will kill your existing potatoes)>

This is how a real president addresses the press, the #US government and the people in the #EU.

Clear, calm, understandable language, to the point, and always open. 👏

We deeply regret the US tariffs imposed on Europe.

Tariffs are taxes.

They are bad for business, and even worse for consumers.

Today Europe takes strong but proportionate countermeasures.

We remain ready to engage in dialogue ↓

No countertariffs without tariffs to counter. It's not even simple economics. It's just common sense.

Been trying to figure out whether books have been removed from Canada's list of potential countertariffs. Turns out they haven't, but they could be removed in the future. Govt hasn't made a decision; just proceeding with already-announced tariffs. Ministry of Finance statement:

8/9 Energy imports face a 10% tariff in the current trade dispute. In response to US measures, the Canadian federal government has implemented its own counter-tariffs, and several provinces have enacted non-tariff countermeasures like cutting off American alcohol sales.

So, Art of the Bluff it is, I guess.

I am glad that the Canadian government isn't having any of it, and is leaving countertariffs in place until the cheetofaced shitgibbon gets serious and either shits or gets off the pot and stops jerking his neighbours around.
