#copyleft

the copyleft/copyright question around ai code (they can’t be works in the traditional sense of the word) is pretty gnarly though; I haven’t seen anything from the usual suspects that gives me any amount of satisfaction that the output from an llm tool is in compliance

using a soulless machine to emulate artists is legal vileness. you are doing mental gymnastics to justify your urge to generate ai feet.

this comes from me. a woman who always posted all of her works for free, or under copyleft when applicable.

Yeh but that implies copyright exists

All property is theft. All intellectual property is theft. There should be no need for copyleft because there should be no copyright
copyleft is a legal technique used in licenses that grants permission to freely use, modify, and distribute a copyrighted work with the requirement that any derivative works must be licensed under the same terms

Books, and almost every other format of learning material. I’ve also written software that runs massive websites you’ve heard of, open source software to help scientists (for free! I guess I’m a serf again), some journal articles, lots of business software, a bunch of articles under copyleft, etc

Si, claro, isto é copyleft, all rites reversed.

Let me say that again, but not backward! MIT License for VST3 (plus other SDK improvements) and GPLv3 for ASIO (with an OBS partnership).

So a fully permissive license on VST3 plug-ins, and a copyleft option in addition to the existing ASIO license. And that makes a ton of sense.
Open Steinberg: VST3 and ASIO SDKs now have open source licenses - CDM Create Digital Music
Open licensing for proprietary audio and plug-in standards could enable the entire industry to move forward on some critical work. So it's great news that Steinberg this month announced not one but tw...

A thoughtful piece. I need, at some point, to write a long copyleft defense of CC BY-SA.
[BLOG] Continuing last week's #OAWeek theme @alittleroad.bsky.social has written about #OA licences for books 📚

❓Who owns open knowledge?
❓What are the implications of different types of open licence?
❓Who makes decisions about reuse in the case of more restrictive licences?

Who owns open knowledge? The two types of licence to consider when making books open access
When a more restrictive open access licence is applied to a book, who gets to make decisions about usage that falls outside the open licence?

it's blatantly stealing wikipedia content and then passing it through an ai rewrite, which, fine, as long as you respect the copyleft

I've already got, and am mulling, the critique that this creates a "copyleft silo" and reduces broad usability.
October 25, 2025 at 3:00 PM
what are you defending? copyleft silos are good if you figure you're preventing some corporation from hedging your oss out of the market. what market are you hedging for?

Of course, rent-seekers are totally baffled by the entire “information wants to be free” ethos of the WMF, the people that built the internet, and the copyleft licensed Wikipedia employs to ensure that its information is provided free for all.

Me compré la verdadera máquina Copyleft.
A diferencia de lo que pasó con la industria discográfica y Napster a principios de siglo, la industria láctea nunca intentó prohibirla. Punto para Mastellone hnos.

tbc im not saying you shouldn't fight copyleft license violations and it's a good thing nonetheless even though i believe it's ultimately a lost cause and nothing short of actual socialism could bring forth real computing freedom

their priorities in whom to fight sure often seems interesting tho

Copyleft and copyright skepticism sought to avoid those exact outcomes! It was the ethos behind Wikipedia, the Free Software Foundation, GNU/Linux, anarchist skillsharing initiatives, libraries, the world wide web!

I’m personally pretty copyleft but not about things like likeness for example, which I think becomes a much more murky issue with AI. I don’t think they should be allowed to do a straight copy of someone, but should they be able to do something 75% similar to someone, trained on their image?

¡Absoluto copyleft!

part of the origin story of F/OSS, the EFF, and copyleft regimes.

And even if they weren't as anti-establishment as we might think, we need useful myths to aspire to in order to rebuild and surpass the culture that gave us these liberatory tools.

Copyleft was about freeing IPs for artistic but not monetary use. OpenAI is explicitly about training an engine with artists’ IPs to make money. The power dynamic is reversed here, and it flows toward money.
