Speaking just from an automation perspective, the hardware that I'm going to first these days is Arista and Nokia. Arista has been a staple and the systems are there. Nokia has been a force for good. With SRLinux and a lot of the core team of ContainerLab at Nokia.

Yup - we use it in some of our labs at work. We have 4 nodes with ceph storage, running a fair few VMs that our engineers use for running all sorts of workloads - typically we have individual VMs and run Containerlab for emulating network topologies.
