Let's discuss morphosyntactic alignment. How does your language treat the agent (A) and patient (P) of a transitive verb compared to the sole argument (S) of an intransitive verb? With nominative–accusative alignment, A and S are treated the same way (the nominative case), while P is treated differently (the accusative case). E.g. in English, we use 'he' in both "he laughed" (S) and "he saw the girl" (A), but 'him' in "the girl saw him" (P). With ergative–absolutive alignment, P and S are treated the same way (the absolutive case), while A is treated differently (the ergative case). These are the most common alignments, but there are a few other possibilities, and it's also possible to mix and match. If you want to go further, what noun cases does your language's grammar distinguish (whether or not they mark it using inflection)?

Classic Bittic is distinct for its heavily prefixing grammar. It classifies all words as operators or operands. When forming phrases, operators precede their operands, and heads precede their dependents. Some words can be operators or operands depending on the phrase. For example, the basic word order is verb-subject-object. The verb is an operator that takes two nouns as operands. Subjects are more salient than objects. make 3sg machine “They make a machine.” Note that the operator precedes the operands. Noun phrases follow the same pattern. Operators like nouns, case particles, and determiners are at the front with the operands following them. More “salient” operands preceding less salient ones. GEN animal person “The person’s animal.” GEN and animal plant person “The person’s plant and animal.”

imo conlangs should always serve the narrative. tolkien uses it to display the long history of his world; adams uses it to highlight the nonhumanness of his characters. is not understanding the conlang speakers important to your narrative? then keep it.

#ConlangNovember 8: Since Bittic does not have a phonology, here is are the rules that govern what is a valid glyph. The idea is that every glyph fills out the whole space it occupies, making boundaries between the glyphs clear. #conlang #conlangs #langsky #conscript
Glyphs in Bittic are four-by-four grids made up of bits (borders are here to show the individual bits). Ones are represented by white pixels. Zeros by black pixels. Every glyph must have at least one “one” bit in every no or column In other words, rows or columns containing all “zeros” are not allowed. A comparison of glyphs, the first is valid and the other two aren't.

What allophonic variation is there in your language? Are phonemes realised differently by speakers in different contexts, despite the speakers still considering them fundamentally the same? Like how in English, the T in 'top' and the T in 'stop' are usually pronounced differently, even though most speakers don't realise this. What about sandhi? Are words ever realised differently depending on the surrounding words? Think of how in English, you might pronounce "did you" as "didge you", or how we use 'an' before a vowel sound in the next word and 'a' otherwise.

Outside of edge cases like that one science community in Final Fantasy 10.

But typically Conlangs are not typically used for cryptographic purposes. And it's gotten really irritating that that seems to be Gemini's default assumption.

With all these issues, why hasn't Gemini been scrap yarded?

i rly do think that if you want to improve as a spec fic writer, the skill you need to focus on is just scene craft. it's not lore or conlangs or magic systems. it's nuts and bolts stuff. rising action - turn - consequences. what does your character want in this scene? and so on.

Let's talk orthography. There are two things you could talk about here. (And you can do both, if you want!) 1. You could discuss a script used by the speakers themselves. How do they record knowledge and messages for posterity, if at all? Clay, stone or wooden tablets? Parchment, papyrus or paper? Digitally? 2. You could discuss a transcription you use in your conlanging notes or in the story that doesn't exist in world. In either case, does it use an alphabet, syllabary or logograms? And if you've developed it, what are the specific characters used? For phonemic writing systems, what phonemes do these characters correspond to? Is it one-to-one?

That's one way to do it. Creating vocabulary for a priori conlangs always gives me a lot of trouble, which might be part of why I'm doing a posteriori ones this time.
