Last time I tested it, my headsets connected to Switch 2 using the AAC codec. AAC’s audio quality in theory is slightly above LC3’s, but I’m not sure how perceptible it is.

Older headsets that don’t support AAC probably fall back to the SBC codec, which is of worse quality than LC3.

James, have you ever heard the story of humpty dumpty?

Humpty dumpty?

Yeah. All the kings horses and all the kings men couldn’t put him back together again. Luckily, we have something better than that: Q’s nanomachines

Nanomachines…

They reassembled you on the molecular level
They should call in Kojima to explain how nanomachines put him back together again. Project codename HUMPTYDUMPTY

Sounds like Switch 2 now supports LE Audio/LC3 codec for low latency? The setting looks similar to Sony Sound Connect’s “Bluetooth connection quality” (image below):

• Sound quality (LDAC/AAC/high bitrate SBC)
• Stable connection (low bitrate SBC)
• Low latency (LC3)

AVI is a file format, AV1 is a codec.

And the only reason twitch exists is because h264 decoding was in most integrated GPUs and computers, and phones, since 2004.

Yes, they do need to wait for AV1 decoding to become more widespread.

Gulliver boy on pc engine is a bit of a technical marvel, as they got actual fmv cutscenes running on it with a unique codec they made just for this game, as opposed to the pc engines usual static shots with lip flaps.

It’s shocking to me that DaVinci Resolve on Linux does not support H264/AAC. That’s gotta be at least 90% of online video. I had to resort to having OBS record using Apple ProRes and whatever the Apple Video Codec was to have Resolve even recognize it as a video/audio file.

The Netflix video codec does not handle areas of deep black very well compared to other streamers. So in order to preserve image detail, the areas that should be a deep, strong black are actually a dark grey. This leaves the image looking like it's faded, lacking contrast and flat.

huh, youtube (on firefox) does its own "h264ify" now somehow? how does it know which codec I have hw decode for?

(literally with hwdec on, it _refuses_ to pick higher resolutions it doesn't have h264 for, when i only have an h264 hw codec working)

This might be the most nonsense micro-transaction I've ever seen. I exported a clip from Steam using H.265 and opened it in the default Windows media player and it prompted me to pay 99¢ to buy a new codec.

So I clicked 'not now' and opened it in VLC

IIRC, they mention that he's an albino in a codec call at some point.

Now that I have Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes under my belt, I think I can safely say that Cassette Tapes are a massive downgrade from Codec Calls. I miss them so much.

if you try to do this you'll run into a bunch of complexity around how EXACTLY the codec separates color from luminance, but the concept should be sound

(I spent a bunch of time trying to come up with an Unstreamable Game but never actually built it. would love to see someone else tackle it lol)

It's true though. I love it when Quake looks like a stop motion film put through a Cinepak codec. It's too unique and iconic

My video codec just achieved 75 MB on 3.5 minute long 720p video.
Ain’t half bad for a homebrew video codec!
November 10, 2025 at 6:55 PM
I'm wondering if there is a way to make it so a codec can't see something. Maybe something being subliminally shown between frames, some transparency black magic that is more obvious on a home machine vs a stream? I'm just spitballing here, I don't really know how video encode/decode works.

I can't even tell what most ads are trying to sell me anymore. Is it like, an app for investing? An online course for project management? Audio rendering codec for high energy consulting firms? Insurance for aromatherapy streamers?
Bar charts for lower back pain?

Who can say
