I’d argue that the domain system is the real problem, rather than the Internet and web-based protocols depending on it.
It should be dependable.
However, I’ve always considered using a ccTLD as bad practice. That goes for .ai and .io also.
Even if that only reduces the issue.

IME I've never seen a ccTLD move quickly following a change in a territory/country's legal status. Key (and painful, for reasons) example is that .SU for, yes, the Soviet Union, is still in the root.

Can't tell if trolling or just repeating what you read in a tech article. ICANN's "likely" move is to reclassify .io from a ccTLD to a gTLD - which won't appreciably change anything for .io websites. ".io could go away" is sensationalism, intentional or otherwise. It _could_, but so could .com
