Cawos is a shadar-kai, his kind’s soul and body are constantly drawn to the Shadowfell, a plane of eternal numbness and despair. While he hasn’t yet succumbed to this curse, his sensations are still numbed; even the spicest food feels bland to him, and he’s almost incapable of laughing.

The right time of year and with suitable 'carrier species' but at the time CAWOS simply dismissed them as escapes!
