Tonight’s Senate vote on the federal government shutdown should have been a time for strength.

Instead we saw capitulation and a betrayal of working Americans.

The American people need more from their leaders.

there is the surrender of Schumer —capitulation for nothing.

Their capitulation is only made more pathetic by their indignation.

This is a perfectly reasonable question for voters to ask, but there are many answers Shaheen could give that don't involve capitulation.
Shaheen: "When I talk to my constituents in New Hampshire, you know what they say to me? They say, 'Why can't you all just work together to address the problems that are facing this country?'"

I can't imagine the Democratic party surviving a capitulation like this. It's unconscionable.

What’s the difference between compromise and capitulation? Compromise trades concessions. Capitulation pays ransom to stop deliberate suffering, and teaches your opponent that coercion works. There are effective responses to coercive bargaining. What we saw was not one of them.

There are two big problems with the “the Dem strategy wasn’t working argument.” One is that it was. The other is that changing the strategy did not require capitulation.

I’m already seeing people insist that even with this capitulation the Democrats will still sweep 2026 because Trump is that bad. It was precisely that attitude that gave us 2024.
November 10, 2025 at 2:07 AM
Dear @schumer.senate.gov, this is who you're surrendering to. NOBODY likes him. Stop this capitulation now.
Trump and Hegseth booed mercilessly for 2 minutes straight tonight by Washington Commanders fans.

Just think about what the next capitulation by the dems will be about, the next big fuck you to the poor.

Trump will, as always, take their capitulation as permission to escalate and do something even more cruel and stupid.

This was just the most pathetic capitulation the dems have done *so far*

@shaheen.senate.gov : “We have a guaranteed vote by a guaranteed date...” 🤷🏼‍♀️

In a functional party system, this kind of capitulation in the face of authoritarianism could mean the end of the Democratic Party.

In our system, it could mean the end of the two party system. Neither party can represent the pro-democracy majority. It's time for something new.
