Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) is in the mint family (Lamiacaeae). Appropriately, the genus name is Greek for "beautiful fruit." It's a bird-friendly shrub native to the SE states from MD - TX. Can you spot the Mockingbird & Cardinal?

Callicarpa bodinieri, aka Beauty Berry, in Oaklands, #YYJ
Beginning to think about Christmas 🎄

If one of those tiny purple bulbs burns out, the whole bush goes dark.

The berries of our American beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) are still lovely and holding on. The name works pretty well.

The beautiful drupes of Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) being a dash of color to the Lyonia landscape as well as a welcome food source to birds including gray catbirds, mockingbirds, and robins. Beautyberry leaves can also be used to make a natural mosquito repellent!

I always try to name things in the alt text as it helps keep the main message brief. However, I guess not everybody reads alt text, so … as I say there, the shrub is Callicarpa. It is also known as American Beauty Berry.

Friday is looking wet, wet, wet here in our little patch of south-east England at the tip of Surrey next to Kent and Sussex but there is still colour in our garden.

Was 1 Dienstag schon wieder! #TeamLaufen

Goh, heeft de Callicarpa nu al besjes?

This isn't saying rip out your Callicarpa necessarily, but maybe think about Aronia or Ilex verticillata (again depending on your region) as companions in a garden aimed at supporting overwintering birds. (Along with seedheads of things like goldenrods and grasses -- we get a lot of birds there!)

We went to a friend's house for dinner and to see their garden. Check out this beautyberry, Callicarpa americana! It's not quite native here but is native to VA. It's a shrub in the mint family which is neat!

There's also a non-native in the trade, C. dichotoma with narrow leaves and...

Late posting as usual and we are now listening to The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte) from Covent Garden on the radio, so the phone is going away for the evening in favour of Mozart.

My front yard had The Most Disappointing Shrubs Ever, but I put off doing anything until we replaced the lead water line & the concrete steps. Finally done, and the new shrubs have been going in!

Still small, and nothing much this time of year, but a gardener can get excited about the future!

🌹A brief giggle exhaled from Lomasi, her thumb slowly caressing Sae's hand as she quietly drank deep in the blush of her face
"Thank you, little Callicarpa~"
She grins warmly
"Do you need me to. Y'know. Back off before you pass out.. Or do you secretly not mind the attention all that much, cariño?~"

I've got alstroemeria, roses, salvias, hydrangea, verbena bonariensis, seaside daisies and nerines, but the star of the show is the acidanthera. It's been going for weeks! 🌱
