#calculators
The real gamechanger for me were production chain calculators. If you're running aground while expanding, it's really handy to just punch in the numbers and be told exactly how many buildings you need for your (target) population.

It’s also insanely wrong. Calculators of all kinds are pretty ubiquitous, thereby diluting math’s importance as a skill

On the flip side, LLMs are retarding (in the literal sense) people’s ability to interact with each other. Social/interpersonal skills are far more valuable as a result.
I think the belief by the powerful that "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" is incredibly revealing in terms of understanding How We Got Here

We have had for decades calculators, spreadsheets, programming languages that do math efficiently even on tiny processors. Even if it worked, using text based AI in giant data centres for that is like using a 747 to pick up the groceries. It's insane.

Yeah, I've just consulted way too many online calculators but 3.2 km (2 miles) in 30 minutes makes a lot more sense than 2 km (1,25 miles).
Seriously, my grocery runs with several kilos on my back are quicker than that.

I really like the digit-by-digit method for finding square roots, fwiw. you do square roots pretty fast purely by hand without calculators. its very useful. it should definitely be in a little handbook of useful mathematical techniques to use when you can't use other tools

and IF we're going to teach a tool that's been supplanted in practical use by better tools -- as hand arithmetic was supplanted by tables and slide rules and then by digital calculators -- then we ought to be teaching the tools that help cement the deeper truths

From the @theguardian.com tonight
"Kayleigh Ward and Richard Monteith take issue with the idea that calculators have rendered a proper education in maths unnecessary”, My grandson age 7 loves maths & is obsessed with everything mathematical.

📰 The R47: A new physical RPN calculator released today in 2025

💬 Comments reveal nostalgia for physical RPN calculators vs. mobile solutions. Some excitement exists, but skepticism about price persists. 🤔

To be honest, when I say "some years ago" or "a few years ago," I'm usually referring to the 1980s, which was ... (cool, pocket calculators are built into phones now) forty years ago.

Close Encounters is a brilliant film. Remember when the craft of making a film was important and AI bag holders weren't marveling at giant calculators making rubbish?

The internet is full of tax calculators. They're boring.

Tomorrow we're launching our Budget tax calculator. Prettier and nerdier than all the rest put together.

AI is already superhuman. So are libraries, cars, and calculators. Not a reason to abandon the strong history of science-led digital policy in the EU.

Calculators are
a convenient tool

And

I'll still do the computations by hand so I don't forget the rules and process

That way I can check my work and that of others🤷🏾‍♂️

Welcome to the wonderful world of AI. Search engines that can't search, annunciators that can't speak, translators that can't translate, calculators that can't do math. How wonderful is technology? And how can anybody believe *this* is AI?? 🙄

The systems are just language pattern models programmed to tell you what you want to hear, the sycophantic approach apparently tests best and increases engagement. 😑

We're working on reproducibility rn, I like my language systems to act more like calculators than omens.

Very cool!! Can't wait.

During playtests, have players had issues with the JRPG-like inflated costs? Which we all have handy calculators, so it isn't a big deal - just curious!
