Powdered whole milk used to make ByHeart infant formula could be a source of contamination that led to an outbreak of botulism that has sickened dozens of babies, U.S. health officials indicated Friday.

A ByHeart official said the finding helps shed light on what has become a “watershed moment” for the company.

Food safety investigators report that they have found the source of botulism that contaminated ByHeart infant formula and sickened more then 50 babies across the country. In statements late Friday afternoon, both the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the outbreak strain of the Clostridium botulinum toxin had been found in a raw ingredient.

U.S. authorities have linked an outbreak of infant botulism across several states, caused by ByHeart's formula to whole-milk powder, sourced from a supplier, the Food and Drug Administration said on Friday.

January 23, 2026 The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported today that a sample of organic powdered whole milk used as an ingredient in ByHeart Whole Nutrition infant formula has tested positive for Clostridium botulinum. The FDA report did not identify the source of the organic powdered whole milk ingredient. The sample of powdered milk was collected by the FDA at a processor for a supplier to ByHeart, and was analyzed by the Wadsworth Center Laboratory of the New York State Department of Health.
