#bryozoans
🌊New Marine Animal Forests Manifesto led by ICTA-UAB researchers calls for urgent action to protect, restore, and sustainably manage the ocean’s hidden rainforests: corals, sponges, bryozoans, and gorgonians that build complex habitats on the seafloor.

Correct on all counts! 🎉
There are also bryozoans - those are the long tubes with the dimples. We’re very lucky as a museum to be so close to Wren’s Nest, many of our most prized fossils are from there!

i didn't know anyone on bluesky even talked about bryozoans. here's a fun one i saw at the end of june this year here milling about the shores of falls lake in raleigh, north carolina. it was maybe 3 feet long

However, the autonomy of bryozoans is partial within the colony; that is, each animal senses changes in its environment and its neighbors and sends this information to the others; we do not have complete assimilation. 2/4

Something similar to what you propose is bryozoans, a colony of marine animals, which supposedly have their ‘brains’ connected by a collective ‘neural network’. 1/4

Back to bryozoans for this #FossilFriday with a sample of free-living (lunulite) cheilostomes from the Chalk of Rügen, Germany. Spot the crinoid interloper.

Traditional phylogenies: brachiopods are shelled phoronids, bryozoans are colonial

Early genetic phylogenies: phoronids are shell-less lingulids, bryozoans aren't even lophophorates

Recent phylogenies: lophophorates are real, phoronids and bryozoans are sisters

Craniids: still a PITA

Just finished delivering an online talk on Chalk bryozoans to the Amateur Geological Society, which was fun

It's always nice when we can use museum collections to do research and other projects! Here is an example from Norway with bryozoans from the 50s!

Okay, I had to get that out of my system.

There are 5,900 species of bryozoans (name means "moss animal"). They're found in the ocean, in lakes, bays, anywhere they can filter food from the surrounding water.

They're often found attached to a substrate like a dock, limb, rock or floating log.

“Ugh; It looks like a brain, man,” my fishing partner said, peering into the swampy water and gingerly poking a gelatinous-looking blob with a boat paddle.

What looks like a xenomorph egg, has jelly like texture, is covered in slime? This thing... uh, whatever it is?

Some people pull Excalibur from the lake. To others is given the Blob of Destiny.

Let's talk about the CURSED GUMMI BEAR, bryozoans.

The Mediterranean is warming fast & future acidification may threaten bryozoans. Using a natural CO₂ vent, our study shows species-specific skeletal shifts, microbiome changes & long-term vulnerability. New animation out now 👇
