Politics, though, was not the focus of the Third Way interviewers, who believed there was more to be gained by asking neutral, open-ended questions. In accordance with Third Way’s ideology, they believed that political partisanship was not most people’s primary concern. But sometimes the Wisconsinites brought up politics anyway. At the Labor Temple Lounge in Eau Claire, nine gruff, tough-looking union men sat around a table. One had the acronym of his guild, the Laborers International Union of North America, tattooed on a bulging bicep. The men pinned the blame for most of their problems squarely on Republicans, from Trump to Governor Scott Walker. School funding, the minimum wage, college debt, income inequality, gerrymandering, health care, union rights: It was all, in their view, the GOP’s fault. A member of the bricklayers’ union lamented Walker’s cuts to public services: “If we can’t help each other,” he said, “what are we, a pack of wolves—we eat the weakest one? It’s shameful.” But their negativity toward Republicans didn’t translate to rosy feelings for the Democrats, who, they said, too frequently ignored working-class people. And some of the blame, they said, fell on their fellow workers, many of whom supported Republicans against their own interests. “The membership”—the union rank-and-file—“voted for these Republicans because of them damn guns,” a Laborers Union official said. “You cannot push it out of their head. A lot of ‘em loved it when Walker kicked our ass.” Debriefing after this particular group, the Third Way listeners said they found the union men demoralizing. “I feel like they can’t see their way out,” Hale said. “They were very negative,” Paul Neaville, another researcher, concurred. They were so fixated on blaming Republicans, Hale fretted. “It was very us-and-them.”

One thing that was important to me was documenting the precise process by which sugar grown on the white Vassalls' slave-labor camps in Jamaica was transformed into their house in Cambridge. This meant following the sugar crop from the fields all the way into the pockets of Massachusetts craftsmen.
Meanwhile, across the street, a later chapter in Cuba’s life was beginning to take shape. In 1757, Henry Vassall’s nephew, John Vassall (1738–1797) graduated from Harvard. Flush with profits from his plantations in Jamaica, John Vassall began to build an impressive Georgian mansion just across the street from Henry and Penelope’s house in 1759.325 The lives of Cuba Vassall, Anthony Vassall, and their children would be bound up in the story of that house for decades to come. Building the Vassall house was an enormous project. By the time it was finished, it redistributed £2,204 15s 11d sterling from John Vassall’s sugar fortune into the pockets of dozens of Cambridge lumber merchants, carpenters, stone masons, bricklayers, blacksmiths, glaziers, and painters in exchange for materials and labor.326 The principal carpenters on the project, [John and Jotham] Walton and Mr. Hering, were paid £402.1.11 ½ and £240 respectively, with hundreds of additional pounds going to other major contractors like mason [Jonathan] Hill, lumber merchant [Samuel] Bradstreet, and brickmaker Caleb Prentice.327 The stone carver Henry Christian Geyer, known throughout eastern Massachusetts for his elaborate gravestones, provided £6.10.0 in stone and £26 in carving services, which may have included some of the plaster busts (Homer, Milton) and animals (“Parrots, Cats, Dogs, Lions, Sheep”) he advertised in Boston’s newspapers.328 Boston merchant Robert Jarvis ordered nearly £250 in wallpaper and other imported “sundries” from London, but the vast majority of the money went to local artisans, laborers, and suppliers.329 These expenditures infused the economy of Massachusetts in general and Cambridge in particular with money from Jamaican sugar. In 1759, the white Vassalls sold their hogsheads of sugar for about £21 each.330 That means that the £16 Samuel Hayward earned for providing shingles for the Vassall mansion was worth about three-quarters of a hogshead of sugar; the £24.12.1 that glazier Joseph Welch made for putting in windows was worth a little more than a full hogshead.331 These ordinary people used their earnings to buy ordinary things. Some of the money went to farmers selling food, some went to shopkeepers selling cloth, some went to wages for laborers and servants. In some cases, the windfall from such a large building project probably allowed white workers to invest in property and build wealth for future generations.

Farmer, grocery cashier, delivery driver, barista, restaurant server. None of those are unskilled.

Bricklayers' skill level is considered on par with doctors!

They just need to show some can-do spirit and stop being lazy. There's always call for bricklayers, plumbers, temporary office or warehouse workers. Hell, why not ask their local high street shops if any work is going? Stop acting entitled to whatever job you want and earn your keep!

Lack of transferable education and professional credentials. Arbitrary and OUR FAULT. My family friends were accomplished doctors, but here had to work as a PA and a nurse because they couldn't use their foreign medical degrees. There's engineers working as bricklayers, other pros driving for Uber.
