Keep an eye out for smoke.” “You can’t be serious,” Wyll sighed, exacerbated. He had known this was coming. “In that darkness it’s far more likely that the pair of you will miss one another, ships passing in the night. Shadowheart can take care of herself.” “And so can I!” Karlach groaned, swinging her massive maul over her shoulder. With her other hand she scooped up Clive and tucked him into one of her belts, making a sort of chest harness for him. “It’s not like I’m going alone.” Astarion tilted his head, quizzically. “Is that a thing? Do you really think something that small and stuffed can keep you safe out there?” He eyed Clive like he did a shiny dagger, like, if the bear did have some mystical aura of protection he would want it. Karlach tried not to think of Astarion trying to keep himself safe, sometime before they met, with something soft and comforting. “Its for emotional support. UGH. I swear, you lot are no fun.” She rolled her shoulders, hearing them pop, “You all sit on your butts and wait, I’ll be right back.” She didn’t wait for their arguments, of which there were plenty, she was sure. If she listened to each one of them, she was sure that she would run out of counters. She made her way out, flaring every once in a while, to shed some light for camp to know where she was as well as to frighten the shadows back into the darkness. She didn’t need a torch, not with the flames that seemed ready to encroach the more her heart ached, or with her bright devilish eyes. She just needed to find a ray of moonlight on the ground, black and white and silver. That wouldn’t be so hard. It wasn’t like the Shadow Cursed Lands werfe that big and she knew not to cross any bridges. There was no reason that Shadowheart would have crossed over to Moonrise. Not unless she was taken there. Karlach grit her teeth. She couldn’t think about that. Her heart hurt. preview of fic “So, this is what was hidden behind the performance, Tav will be disappointed.” The voice was hesitant and charming at the same time, like the owner didn’t know if he should make himself known. Gale jumped into motion, wiping his tears and snot off with his sleeves and shifted into a kneel instead of a ball. He looked up but he couldn’t see who was in the tent, not with the soft orange light of the fire putting him in silhouette. He didn’t need to see though, he could recognize Astarion by his body language, his size, his voice. “ Ah, Astarion! I didn’t hear you come in. How can I help?” He pushed the words out, trying to cover up his prior activities. He threw on a smile, tried to look like he meant it. He hoped that Astarion needed something, that he could help, that he could do something other than languish in his own failings. “You always say that, Darling, you don’t need to say it now,” Astarion pointed out, “You don’t need to say it to me. You’re the one needing help, not me.” “Of course,” Gale said, biting back his disappointment, looking around the tent. He could hardly see anything in this darkness. Astarion could probably see everything about him. “Because I received bad news. I never intended to make the rest of you worry. I am aware of my standing with you all, if that standing is at risk, I will do what I can to repair it. I am in better control of the orb, Elminster gave me Mystra’s blessing- “BLESSING?” Astarion interrupted, loud and angry. It took Gale off guard and he flinched, shoulders hunched, head down. He was a child again, not for the first time that night, about to have his knuckles bruised for his disrespect. He was a wizard again, about to be cast out from the pride of his betters, he could almost picture Astarion’s rage but, it wasn’t Astarion’s, it was Mystra’s, placed on Astarion. “That bitch gave you a death sentence! Forgiveness? You do not need such a thing! Nor her blessing! What have the Gods ever done for you?”
